Rescued my blind boy

Post by Mia »

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

I feel like I have been away for years, but my new little blind puppy boy is home and doing great! I cannot imagine that the vet wanted to put him to sleep. The drive to pick him up took forever, but we are home now.

He is just beautiful! He has bilateral cornal edema which is basically swelling in the cornea. He cannot see, but we are going to a couple of opthamologists to see if we can do corneal implants.

He is just a loving, friendly and bold as a seeing pup twice his age. I think he may have a little sonar going on - like they say, the loss of one sense seems to increase the other senses. He is just amazing.

He and Mia are getting along so well. She is so gentle with him.

I can see that I won't be getting any sleep anytime soon.

You all were right, everything is wonderful. I don't know why I was so nervous. He is just a living teddy bear doll. I am calling him Pooh Bear until I can come up with a name. I loved the name "Chutney", but he doesn't really semm like a chutney. Sproket (and I don't even know how to spell that) sounded cute, but I stole that name from a friend. So, we are gonna have to work on that.

I am sorry to keep blabbing, but I am worse than a teenage with her first crush. It's just a love fest over here.

Wonderful news. Since we know what kinds of names you go for now, we can all chip in a few suggestions...lol. Sprocket is cute. I like Spunky! Or give him a power name, like Thor.

Blind chows do fine. I knew one once, she was blind from birth, but when you met her you would never have known it until you looked at her eyes. When you put her in a new situation she would start walking in ever increasing circles and would map the new area in her mind by smelling and hearing the things in the new place. She wasn't timid or anything, I watched her running around her back yard and she navigated it without a stumble and didn't run into anything including her mom, dad and older sister. She came right up to me, (a perfect stranger) without any wariness at all.

I'm sure your little pup is going to have a long and happy life, with or without sight, he can hear, smell and feel and those three senses will more than make up for his lost sight.

Oh and we WANT pictures...in case you haven't heard.

As for a name, how about Dare, short for Daredevil the comic character that is blind.

Dare, now that's cute!

Oh yes, I know you guys - picture hounds. My girlfriend took buches of pics of him and when she is done sleeping off the long trip (she went with me to get him,) she's going to e-mail me the pics. Oh, I cannot wair for you all to see him.

I still cannot get over that they wanted to put him down. (Don't tell Mia this, but he is friendlier and more outgoing than she is. But, she will always be my sweetheart.)

His eyes look pretty bad, kind'a makes you squirm when you look at them, but it sure doesn't seem to bother him. Ah, he is just my baby.

Oh yeah! I forgot you were picking up your new Chow, Congratulations.

I like the name Dare, If you like that name I would stick with that.

If they find out they can restore his sight that has to be a strange feeling I've heard People that get their sight and hearing back after never having it Panic and get scared, it has to be a freighting but exciting sensation if thats the right word.

Yay! I'm so excited everything
has worked out so well.

I'm no good with names, but something
like Daredevil would fit. I was
trying to think of something that
would go with Mia -- can't think
of a thing.

Can't wait for the pictures!

Hmm, How about Little Stevie Wonder?
Monet went blind in later life Mia
and Monet, I like alliteration. But
really, naming him yourself is half
the fun.

Thanks...ooo he's such a sweet baby.

Did you all say you wanted pictures? Really? I am so surprised. LOL!

Dare, Alexi, Remington...oh there are so many. He is such a special little chow. I cannot believe that he could have been put to sleep - that some one would throw away this little love bunny. He so wants love and attention and he's such a bold little hairball. He is just a bubbly, fuzzy gift of love.

Pics are coming, I promise. I know the rules.

 We rescued a 4 week old kitten that was blind (born without eyes). We named her Orbison (like in Roy Orbison) and call her Orbi for short.

But Dare is a good name, too.

OMG Lise, I'm crying here, he's just bloody adorable. I am so happy everything has turned out okay. I've been thinking about you a lot the last few days. Do you think the vets might be able to do something to fix his sight?

By the way I love the name Zachary but I love Chutney too!!

More photos please.

Louis looks cinnamon to my eye. Maestro is very cute! How does your girlfriend like Conrad? It looks like Boz has her wrapped around his finger. or, is that you? Is Mia giving you the look yet? Like, Can we take Marco back now? That is what Pip did after an hour (okay, 5 minutes) with baby Lily An.

As an aside, I used to call the Boxer I wanted to rescue Chutney because her name is Chauncey, and it doesn't fit her. So I called her Chutney because it fit her better. She is in a mobile home with my nephew now, thank goodness!
