Any advice on a new pup and socialising it with cats?

Post by patrickcrazy »

I’m hoping to get a female chow chow pup who’ll be about 8/9 weeks and I’m just wondering does anyone have any advice or experience with them and cats especially? I know a lot about them generally but never owned one so any info would be useful! I’ve had dogs and animals as a whole my whole life so I do have a lot of experience with dogs at least, just less so with puppies too

In my home we have a cat, 3 guinea pigs and some goldfish (who of course won’t be in contact with the dog lol) and a male rescue German Shepherd/Pitbull mix who’s neutered so I’m hoping everyone will get along. From my research they can and do get along with cats if they’re socialised with them early but if anyone has any experience in that area especially any advice would be so welcomed

Before I purchased a chow I talked to my vet....here's what she told me and so far my 9 year old chow has been a great dog..Chows completely change at 2.5 years old...like someone flipped a switch...if you haven't followed these steps your dog will become a statistic!!! Whatever they are not confronted with as a puppy they may be aggressive towards as an adult!
SHE SAID YOU MUST FOLLOW THE RULES!!!!
1) socialize, socialize, socialize!!!!
I took my puppy to a dog park 3 times a week where he saw dogs and people
We had stray cats around our house, they would come and rub on him. So he doesn't mind cats.
2) expose them to children
My puppy was raised with my granddaughter who was 2 when I brought him home...he likes children
3). Teach strangers NOT to crowd them or reach out to him....LET HIM COME TO THEM..if he doesn't chances are he doesn't care for them.
4) get him used to being touched all over as puppies. Rub their insides of their ears. Play with their feet, tail, and legs. During my Chows 1st 2 years I took him to a groomer once a month for his first 6 months then once every 3 months...at a year I started having him groomed...after that he knew what he was there for and was a complete gentleman.
5) just because they are laid back and seem obedient as puppies train them anyway.
6) give them toys and bones and then say in a playful voice gimme that and take it away..then give it back. If someone (especially a child). Takes it he will think they are playing and it won't turn into an ugly situation...do the same with his food.
7). Know your dogs expressions and still watch the strangers around him.

As a result my vet thinks he is a perfect gentleman ...a new tech will be reluctant to hold him during exams...my vet will chuckle and say he's the best boy ever...you don't have to worry about him!
