Dear Chow Chow Community,
My husband and I have had Simba our 9 year old female chow since she was a puppy, and recently we decided to get another chow chow, and 3 days ago we went to take him, he is now 3 months old and his name is Pumba (even though he still doesn't know it).
As expected, from reading a lot from you guys and knowing by now how chows act, Simba is not very happy with her new playmate. She won't hurt him, that is clear, she growls at him a little bit when he gets in her face, but mostly, she just runs away from him. She doesn't look at him, she didn't sniff him once, and she just wants to be left alone completely. But if Pumba goes near her, she gets up and quickly moves away from him into a corner. We tried at first not saying anything to her (Simba), not tell her to stop growling, so she can have the chance to establish that she is the older one and the first one here in our home, but now we are not so sure that this is the right way to deal with them.
My family has 1 golden retriever, Simba met him when she was a puppy and he was 2 y/o, and a t first she was acting strange but today, 9 years later, they are friends and they like each other, and sometimes also play together. Our dear Simba is not very well socialised, and that is my fault, because I lived alone with her during university, and I was not socialising much, and we moved a lot of different apartments so it was hard to keep her being dog friends in the park. So to summarise, she has always been aloof, and on the other side of the room, she adores me and my husband (even though it took her 7-8 months to start getting along with my husband), but she never showed any interest for other dogs or people, she endures the petting if someone approaches her, but she does not like it, and the same with other dogs, she growls at them if they get in her space, but she never bites them, she will rather move herself out of the way in the end.
Will this behaviour be any different with Pumba now (the 3 months old puppy)? Will they eventually become friends? Will Simba start accepting him, and stop being offended and depressed since he got here?
Please help us with advice, how to act? How to help them? How to help Simba be more at ease in the house? Will this change for the better? How can my husband and I assist and help?
Thank you in advance, every piece of advice is welcome and wanted
