Help with dog food for my chow with sensitive skin
Hi,
I am currently feeding my 16 month old cream chow Harrington’s dry food and occasional wet food on evenings (forthglade or Harrington’s) and boiled chicken. Her skin has been terrible the past 6 months and she has been biting her thighs pulling her beautiful hair out! The back of her looks so patchy and her tail is a shadow of what is used to be! Can anyone recommend any food that I could swap to that would help improve her skin and fur?
Thank you

Re: Help with dog food for my chow with sensitive skin
Since posting above I have sought some advice from a professional show chow chow owner and asked what she feeds her dog on as his fur is Amazing and he is so chunky and fluffy, she told me she feeds him royal canin adult dry food and leaves this down for him during the day, on the evening she gives him forthglade wet food with the rest of the dry and alternates with tripe (250/200g) every other day. she also adds yumove working dog supplements (2 a day) mixed in with his dinner and paw originals plaque X powder (1 spoonful) to his dinner too. We are going to gradually start swapping our girl over to this diet and see if it makes a difference over the next year. We worked out this costs on average £20 a week (with her eye wipes and cod liver oil) so it is worth it in our eyes. We even took her to the vet and they said they couldn’t see anything that would cause her to do this to her fur, so we put it down to a bad summer. Hopefully the change in diet will help!

Consider the age and size of your dog. All foods are labeled with the type of pet the product is designed for. For example, there are special foods for puppies, for pregnant and lactating dogs, for animals after spaying or neutering, etc.

Chows are prone to skin allergy. You must be choosy in selecting their dry food. Cassie never had anything like bald spots. I would look at her nose, if she’s allergic to her dog food she’d scratch it until sometimes it would bleed. Time to change food.there was a time I shifted her to home cooked meals.
Re: Help with dog food for my chow with sensitive skin
My chow chow developed a skin condition, turns out it's a sensitivity to something in the yard...the vet recommended an anti fungal spray...it stopped her itching and digging from the first day...steps included giving her a bath, towel or blow dry on cool (leaving her wet or damp and to dry on her own adds to the problem) and then apply spray to affected area.
Hope it helps...I can give you the name of the one we use if you'd like.

I have heard that chicken is a very common allergen in dogs, so maybe, after consulting a vet of course, try removing chicken from her diet for a month to see if it gets better.

Have you considered a vet check-up? Skin issues can sometimes indicate underlying health problems. Regarding food, try a hypoallergenic diet with limited ingredients like fish or lamb. Consult your vet for specific recommendations and potential food allergies. Also for meds consider to buy them at Canadian Pharmacy Online . Good luck!

Your Chow might have a food allergy. Try grain-free food with limited proteins like fish or lamb - avoid chicken as it’s a common allergen. Regular baths with hypoallergenic dog shampoo can also help. Our Chow faced similar issues—we switched to fish-based food with Omega-3 supplements. Visible improvement in a few weeks! Frequent brushing helps too
