Hard fur on back

I have a question. I have a 5 month old chow chow. 2 weeks ago I flew on vacation and left him with my parents. When I got back I noticed that there is big line of harder hair all over its back. Parents don't know where it came from. I washed him, and yet the line remained. The rest of the coat is soft and nice, only this one line is stiff. What can it be?
