Dear Fellow Chow Loving homo sapiens,

We have recently (i say recently, 4 months ago) fell in love with our little chow (TED), he is quite possibly the best behaving dog I have seen. He has never defecated or weed in the house (apart from the 2nd bedroom which is carpeted), he has a good appetite, knows his name, we have taught him a few tricks, come, sit, down, on your bed etc.

However, we have tried our best to socialise the little furry fella (and with me and my girlfriend he is amazing), but if anybody who he doesnt know, reaches down and tries to stroke him, he HATES it. Backs up, growls and barks - All at the same time whilst his tail is wagging. Then after a while he gets used to them and is ok, licking and stroking etc.

What are the best techniques for this? How do we socialise a 6 month Chow Chow that seems to be nervous of strangers?

Michael (Ted' best friend)

Keep doing what you are doing. The tail wag is a good sign. He is just being cautious. Encourage him when he meets new people. Tell him they are OK. Make sure they approach him in the correct manner. No sneaking up on him. Straight on from the front, and no hovering.
