A Prayer for those who have lost their beloved pet.

A Prayer for those who have lost their beloved pet.
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said " it's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew....
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out... then come home to be with me.

I cried like a baby. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Sharing a good cry with people who care on this site helps the healing tremendously. It is so nice to be able to share our pain with people who understand. Once after Chica died I had a dream and it was like Kansas in the Wizard of Oz before all hell broke loose, and Chica was there and she was smiling and wagging and in the dream I ran in to tell my husband, "Chica's not dead, she's still here!" She was standing up on a higher plane from the earth. It was so real I still believe it is true; Our babies are not dead, they are just sleeping. I think God knew how much I was hurting and He was trying to tell me something.
Anyway, bless you for sharing this with us.

poem
Hi! This is my first time here today. I was online just looking at pics of chow chows and i came to this site, and I am so thankful for this wonderful poem. I had to put my Best Friend down yesterday. He was a true friend since Dec. 23, 1993. My 7 year old doesn't know he is not coming home. Is there any easy way to share this with him? We have 8 other pets we love , but, Leo was just so special, gentle and one of a kind! Thank you for listening

I will always cherish your unconditional friendship!!!
Sorry for your loss. The best way to tell children is to be honest, and keep to the simple facts. Answer all their questions as truthfully as possible, and be ready to comfort, or let the child go be alone, if that is their nature to do. I am so sorry you have to go through all this, my sympathies on your loss.
You also might want to tell him about the Rainbow Bridge and maybe show him the pictures on here of some of the other Chows that have passed. There are websites that show the Rainbow Bridge and tell the storys of the Chow's that have gone there. I think kids can handle this stuff a little better then us adults.
Your son will never forget the Chow he had as a child so when he is out there in the world he will have the perfect home for another Chow.

A new wise friend I have made here advised me to stay, to read and post as a way of going through my grief at the loss my own Best Friend January 18. Reading the above poem made me cry too...in a good way because I struggle with all of those moments, not every day all day, but every day its something...
I made the comment that losing a human friend is not the same as losing a dog friend...and I am not sure why...perhaps its the difference in the kind of relationships...I have found losing my pet, my friend, much much harder and the grief longer lasting and more poignant...I don't know. It just is and I am with it.
Thank you for posting that poem...

This poem has been in my family for years. Being raised around animals (goats, cows, horses, especially dogs, cats, etc) we were so close with all. kisses and everything (yes we kissed our goats.) Every time I lost a pet I remembered this poem. It always helped me.
Blessings to you all in your time of loss.
