Help!

Post by edbrook »

Hi! I came across this site and I'm hoping y'all can help us with a more recent issue with our ChowChow. His name is Thor. He is 6 years old. For context, this is my 2nd ChowChow and my husband's sixth. He's always had some anxiety with loud noises such as hiding behind the couch during storms and fireworks, but more recently, he seems to be scared when the heat is on. I know this sounds strange, but we've noticed when it is really cold outside, he paces around the house and wants nothing more than to be outside (and with it being so cold, the heat is pretty much constantly running especially at night). We don't crate him and he'll typically sleep either in the living room or the office which is adjacent to the living room. However, when it's really cold outside, he barrels through the gate that we have up to prevent him from going upstairs (we have a cat) and he'll paw at our bedroom door until we get up. When we get up, he goes darting downstairs and goes straight to the door to go outside. We'll let him out thinking maybe he needs to go to the bathroom and he darts outside and just lays down. He would stay out there as long as we allow it. I know he's a ChowChow with layers of fur and can withstand colder temperatures, but I'm talking temperatures that are in the teens. If we don't make him come in, I know he would lay outside all night. Anyone else have any similar experiences?? ANY advice you can offer is much appreciated. We're soooo tired. I don't think either of us have slept all night long for over a month. I've also tried the calming supplements, anxiety supplements, CBD for dogs, and literally nothing has helped. He also has medicine that the vet gave us that is supposed to help calm him down before vet visits, but that medicine makes him so mean when the medicine starts wearing off so I don't want to use that. It also has no effect on his anxiety and definitely does not help him be calm at the vet.
