Homeowners' Insurance

Post by aware »

Hi Everyone,
My husband and I are working on buying a house and we have been told by our current insurance broker that they will not provide us with Homeowners' Insurance because we have Chow's. So to heck with them..

Do any of you use an insurance company/broker that either allows chows or will exclude coverage for dogs?

Thanks,
Allison

State Farm Insurance (at least in California) does not have a breed ban list.

Good luck!

I have United. They exclude any injuries or damages caused by any animal - dog, cat, rabbit, bird, etc. There's a whole list and it says "not limited to."

I have heard of only one company in Florida that'll allow chows but I believe they have the same "we just won't cover anything they might do" type of clause.

So I don't really see a difference in my policy and the other company's except mine costs $700/year versus the $2000/yr for the other one. I called my insurance agent and didn't tell him who I was (just in case he would have to report to them that I was thinking about getting a chow - this was before I actually got McKenzie) and he told me just to stick with the one I have because even if she did bite someone, neither company would pay for it and I'd be on my own and then would probably not renew my policy.

I REALLY wish the stupid breed list would be abolished or at least give responsible owners and their dogs a chance by allowing some good behavior test or something.

We also have State Farm. Our agent knows we have chows and he's most emphatic that they have no breed restrictions.

As far as I know my insurance company (USAA) has no breed restrictions. The way I see it, the insurance companies should be happy there's a "scary dog" on the property to deter break-ins and theft. If there's going to be a breed restriction, it should be for the "real" biters...the yappers. But I don't think there should be any discrimination.

There are also companies that will write separate liability policies just for dogs, such as Prime Insurance Syndicate (http://www.primeis.com, 800-456-4576, ext. 7801). In these cases, the dog is excluded from the homeowner’s policy.

The AKC web site, http://www.akc.org, contains a Homeowner’s Insurance Resource Center with tips on dealing with breed and dog discrimination and sample letters to contact your local and state officials. A list of insurance commissioners by state is available at http://www.akc.org/life/homeins/statesins_links.cfm.

A home insurance told me that as long as there is a fenced yard, there is no problem.
The company did not even ask what breed.

ValuePenguin, Allstate, American Family, Auto-Owners, Nationwide, Progressive and Travelers have a long list of restricted dog breeds which includes Chow chow. So, I don't use any of them.
State Farm is good, no restrictions. GBWhatsApp APK
