chow chow from the philippines

i would like to share my chow chow named coco. he is 8months old now weighs about 20kgs. coco's coat color is chocolate

Although he does appear to be very much a chow from the photos, Chocolate is not a recognized breed color. In fact, i have never seen that color in a Chow. I am suspecting a mix.

They say a chocolate brown chow chow is actually a sun exposed 'rusty black'. Animal Planet's photo of a chow chow is chocolate brown though... Perhaps he qualifies as a dark chestnut red?

If you google bear coat shar pei and look under the pictures you will see a puppy and an adult that looks very similar to your chow. And they do come in chocolate ! Either way he is very cute!

Sorry, Chowpups, wasnt quite following...are you thinking the dog is Shar Pei?

I think that is a good explanation...likely a Chow / Shar mix.

Rory if you look up Bear Coat Shar pei ( or even choc. bear coat shar pei)you will see a breeder named Sandy S. ( something there) she has pictures of her bear coat shar peis and they look very similar to this pup! I have seen one bear coat sharpei and at first I thought it was a chow. I believe they say its from a recessed chow gene that's how they got the bear coat .. Just like we have smooth chows they have long coat shar peis not sure what the standard is?
I personally think that's what this might be but Not 100%. But if they were told they bought a chow maybe some how a recessed gene popped up with the choc color???
