which harness ?:o)
i wondered if you guys could tell me which harness you would recommend please x
Re: which harness ?:o)
Loha wears a rolled leather collar. He pulls strongly at times (see below) but I am stronger than he is. Also, he knows that I am our pack leader and we are a very happy pack.

I use the Gentle Leader brand "Easy Walk Harness". I can't walk Carter without it. It's a no pull harness that's easy to put on once it's adjusted. It's safe and humane. Carter actually gets excited when I get it out, because he knows it means we are going out for the day or on a walk. He sticks his head right through it and stands there nicely while I put it on, even though he wants to go!

Coco has a classic harness made of nylon today, but I want to buy her a rond leather harness as it is better to protect the fur.
I've been meaning to buy it for some time, I was waiting for her to be full grown, but I think I've waited enough now!
That's what her present harness looks like:
What do you use for Lola?

Re: which harness ?:o)
at the minute just a all in one collar and lead which makes into a choker its nylon to but it isnt any good she still pulls
Re: which harness ?:o)
I use a haltie and find it quite good but I worry that it will spoil her nose fur. I have put off buying a harness because my neighbours Weimerana has one and it tows her along with her feet off the ground! Probably a different make to the Gentle Leader brand "Easy Walk Harness" but I don't understand how they stop a dog pulling?
Re: which harness ?:o)
I think it depends on whether your chow is a puller or plopper downer. If your baby is a puller then gentle leader is a very good harness. LEO doesn't pull that much - unless she sees something that she wants to go after like, squirrel, raccoon, skunk, a dog..... Anyways, for me pulling her up on her feet when she is plopped down is more of a problem, so I use a nylon choke. Gentle leader harness is one of those "used & new" things of LEO's we have in our household.....

Willow has a Webmaster harness. Highly recommended to me by the orthopedic specialist she saw for her arthritis. They are washable, comfortable for the dog and have a handle on top for control if needed or for pulling them out of the pool, helping out of the car, etc.
The company is RuffWear--it's www.ruffwear.com if anyone is interested.

The Easy Walk harness has a martingale style loop on the chest, when they pull, it tightens and makes the dog go more your way. They don't like the pressure, so they behave. It is completely humane and causes no pain. Carter will wear his until he's too old to pull anymore!
Thanks SweetPea!

Bramble is finally getting to go to her puppy classes at the end of the month that she missed four months ago when she hurt her legs. Better late than never I say. So what I would really like is for her to walk nicely on a collar and lead! Has anyone achieved that or does everyone use some sort of restraining harness etc? Am I being unrealistic?

Re: which harness ?:o)
It might be easier for Bramble to learn to walk nicely with just a leash and collar because you've had her since she was a puppy. Puppies learn better. Carter is a few years old and I think he would have been easier to train as a puppy.
Thanks SweetPea!
Re: which harness ?:o)
No! I walk mine on a martigale collar (but that is because I fear their escape from a flat collar) & they don't pull. It is hard work to train this though, & I would recommend a front fastening harness as a training / management tool until you have it trained. Dogs pull (in general) because it works for them. They pull, you follow, they get to go where they would like to go... perfect for them! I clicker train, so I click & treat when they are walking well next to me, or anywhere within a slack line. I stop when the line goes taut, say 'ops' then turn with them & walk 15steps backwards. Then we turn & try again. I only train this for a little while to start with in each walk & use the harness the rest until they are pretty good at it. It does take time & can be frustrating though, just keep calm & you'll winSirchow wrote: Am I being unrealistic?
Thank you Elodie!
Re: which harness ?:o)
I've used a couple different kinds of harnesses and leashes. She seems to pull the same amount with any of them, although the harness makes me feel a LITTLE better when she does pull she doesn't make that choking sound. EVERYONE reccomends an Easy Walk harness, or whatever they're called. They also have harnesses that have clips on the front, top, and sides for different kinds of control. If your dog pulls a lot then hooking them upfront, when they pull, they have to turn around and face you. With the sides, if you have a really well leash trained and calm dog, you clip in and it keeps the leash from tangling in legs, it's a more relaxed way to walk for already trained dogs. The top latches are more traditional. I have yet to try the Easy walk, I'm also waiting for her to reach her full size. I have a harness that's slightly different from the traditional, it rides up the neck less, there are two "D" hooks on top that BOTH have to be attached to the collar. It seems a little better than the traditional but not as effective as the Easy Walk
As for leash training: it's HARD. Ok, maybe I exaggerate, but it does take a lot of patience, especially if you have a puller like me. But I refuse to believe its impossible or unrealistic. You should too, SirChow! We've been loose with training her for it but with a lot of treats, a LOT of patience, and a lot of walks, she's gradually getting better and better. As it is, when we leave the house she's PULL PULL PUULLLLLL!!!! but, even with no correctiong, about halfway through our walks she just falls into stride with me doesn't pull at all. A totally loose leash. We jsut have to work on that first part
