Eye surgerieS

Post by Coco Chow »

I know many of you have a chow who had surgery to correct entropion.
I was wondering how many times did you have to do the surgery?
Thanks

Just once so far, we did both eyes at the same time. One eye still leaks sometimes, but I think it is because he likes to roll in the dirt.

Mailie has had 2 surgeries 1 year apart on both eyes, upper and lower lids and might have to have a third surgery on one eye, upper lid only. She is currently on cyclosporin eye drops.

Only once per chow. Teddy's eyes still water but they don't turn in so vet says it is probably allergies. Seems to be worse this time of year so probably outdoor allergies as he wants to live in the yard right now (hunting small game).

Thanks.
Coco had 2 surgeries in just a few weeks.
I am hoping that when the fur around the eyes grows back, it won't go in her eyes this time like after the 1st surgery...
I hope she won't need a 3rd one [-o| .

My regular vet always tells me of that chow that he had to put through surgery *5* times, twenty years ago! That story has always freaked me out and that is why we went to that animal eye specialist for Coco  ...

I was really worried about the eye surgeries before adopting Jasper in March. I read about the horribles on the internet and was really worried about the expense in pain and money. Jasper's picture on the rescue site showed his runny eye, and when we met him, his eyes were runny. But then on this forum, someone posted a comment saying that these eye surgeries are sometimes done unnecessarily; that one should explore allergies etc first. So I asked the rescuer, Deb, about the eyes and she said just likely dirt or allergies. Well we adopted Jasper and wouldn't you know, there was an eye issue. But it was not the lid requiring surgery: it was an irritation requiring eye drops. A few weeks later, all was well. I would get a second opinion on the surgeries.

Thanks but in Coco's case, the problem is not having runny eyes at all. The problem is ulcers. Her fur rub her eyes and it gives her ulcers. If we hadn't done the surgery, both time, she would have lost her left eye...
