Introducing Mochi & Yoshi in Cali

Post by Mochi_Yoshi »

Hello Everyone at Chowchow.org,

My name is Marc Anthony (the DH - and yes that is my first name...) and I would like to introduce to you Betty, my newly wedded wife (bout 3 months now), and our two new wonderful chowlings Mochi and Yoshi!

Mochi and Yoshi are now 16 weeks old and are from the same litter… my goodness they are growing up pretty darn fast. They are about 22lbs, give or take a pound, and are gaining a pound a week. (They get a “weigh in” on the weekend – usually Saturdays).

Mochi is cream colored with a dark brown tip on her tail.

Yoshi is cinnamon with a black tip on her tail.

Fortunately but unfortunately I am a newbie with Chows but my wonderful wife has experience with two chows in the past 14+ years. So she is showing me the ropes before our chowlings decide to “own” me instead of me owning them. LOL

I personally have been viewing this site as a guest for a few months now and I think this is a great forum for Chow enthusiasts. (I think now I am one)
To make a very long story short (because I could talk for hours… but then my wife would say – c’mon move the story along already…oh sorry getting side tracked…) … WELL: we have moved from the east coast (NYC) to settle down in California (North Bay). My fiancée at the time, now wife, had a 7 year old chow named Bebe, who unfortunately died from being struck by a car… As painful as it was it took months of grieving and grow strength mentally having another dog… (that post will be in the “Memorials and Prayers” forum) --- fast forwarding to a month after we got married I have decided to get another dog – a chow-chow none the less… it was our wedding gift to us. We searched far and wide and got two wonderful darling chow in the beginning of April. \:D/

The first few week it was a lot of babying – pointing them in the right direction to go pee (like every 2 hours), using the doggie door, making familiar noises, trying to get them recognize their names, etc… but especially having the pups realize that we are their pack leaders. … Before I go off telling even more stories I will stop here and say that I am happy to get on this site and share the fun, and funny stories, also the terror that they cause of our chows just as you all share yours….

If you can’t tell I am the talker between my wife and myself… LOL
Anyhow I will post some pictures to share with everyone. As our chows grow up from puppies to adults.

Thanks for reading,
MA, Betty, Mochi & Yoshi

Yes, it really is alot of work. I will only say socialize, socialize, socialize. A new dog a day, a new person a day. If you find yourself at the naughty stage and do not know what happened, look in the training section. I am sure you may know this having visited before. Sounds like you have a good idea what needs to be done, and the nature of the Chow Chow. But those Chowlings...they are...what's the word...oh yeah, ADORABLE!

A fellow Chow enthusiast.
Come on, they are not hard work.
It is such a pleasure to attend to them.
Enjoy it now because as they get older, they will
show such independence that you will long for the days
when they looked up to you.
I am also with my first Chow and my biggest mistake is not
enough socialization.

Welcome and Mochi & Yoshi are so cute its making me start to think 2 is better than one. Iam really struggling with this and your pics are making it harder.. lol.. Its so nice they are from the same litter. I so should have done that.. but at the time I had an older chow. Oh, it will be fun to watch them grow together Iam sure.. It is alittle work but it so pays off.. enjoy they grow like weeds.

Thanks for the warm welcoming....

Having them both are a handful since they are young but the love and the purple kisses that they give back is a lot in return. The misses says that gaining the chow's trust and having them trust you back is HUGE... I am starting to see that now. Socialization is a BIG deal too... we have brought them out a few time already and they are still timid of other people. Just gotta get out here more and get them a little more social.

Personally I feel they are a good amount of work; at times it is double the trouble but also double the love and affection. I am not as experienced when Chow are older but I hear from my wife and other chow owners that they just become independent and know what they want. Right now they play fetch and bring it back... will they not do that when they get older... oh man I better keep on playing with them and enjoy these stage in their life.

Chows are quite smart and they seem to know when something is new in the house or if something is out of place.... Where my concern is when they are quiet and out of sight for like 10 minutes, that is when I get concerned. But hey they are puppies right and they will venture out the yard and test their limits (like trying to eat my wife's veggie garden) ... LOL - I bet she is reading this right now and is NOT laughing with me...

Welcome and congratulations, they are adorable!
Can I ask why you decided to adopt 2 right away instead of one?

OMG they are so cute and am trying hard to resist another at the moment - not helped by breeders who keep ringing up and offering me puppies. I would also suggest socialising them on their own so that they don't rely on each other for courage. They wont always be able to and it is good to spend time one on one to get closer to the little darlings. Did I say how cute they are?

...................just picked them up and put them on it then took the picture. I have got a picture of them when they were a bit older and the bench had been painted green.
Sadly, we no longer have it. It wasn't a full sized bench - we bought it when our granddaughter Louise was a little girl.
We will have to get another one for Connor!!

Well we always had a multi pet household, and we just think it's nice for them to have each other. Sure they are companions for us, and we give them the best that we can, but at the end of the day we are still different species and we can only provide so much for them...there's aspects that only dogs can provide dogs and we wanted to provide as well rounded of a life for them as we can. Plus my wife isn't working right now, so she has time to devote to them. They are so good together, I guess the fact that they have not been apart since conception plays a role in it! But they still see us humans as their main care givers and leaders and they listen well. We walk them together with a 'coupler', they eat from the same bowl (we free feed), and share all their toys.

They each have a very distinct personality and stand their own ground. It has been such a blessing to have them, all the work is well worth watching them grow up. One thing that I find especially adorable is that whenever they are in a new environment or when they are just not sure about something, they stand next to each other facing opposite directions...like they got each other's back kinda thing or between the two of them they have a 360 degree view?! They just naturally do this everytime! Does anyone else's chows do that too?

Not quite as you describe - but Milly and Mabel, who are also litter mates do watch in different directions sometimes when they are in the garden. Most times they lie together but if there is disturbance in the air or noise around, or whatever, one will certainly watch one way in and one the other.

They are gorgeous! We remember those early moments - photos and videos and lots of them, it's worth it later on I guarantee it. In our case my wife is the newbie, I've had multiples of nearly every critter at some point. We wish you all the best!
