Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE
Hi Everyone,
It has come to my attention that we have some chow crosses that are taking part in the survey on the OFA site. I really hate to discount anyone, but we are trying to get an account of issues in purebred chows only.
We welcome everyone who owns a purebred chow to participate. But we must confine it to that.

I see Red Dragon's post now. I assume this is the survey for this topic as well?

Yes, they are the same survey. I'm sitting here trying to figure out how you would know it's a crossbred if the survey is annonymous? I thought it was self explanatory, it clearly said Chow Chow.

So it's only for chows with papers right?

Re: Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE
I wouldn't think they had to have papers. Just be purebred.
Re: Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE
Is there a definition of PB chow? I want to post this along but was asked if that meant that the chows had to have registered papers? Or ? Thanks
Thank you Elodie!
Re: Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE

Re: Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE
I don't see any reason they need to have papers, just be sure they are offspring from two fullblooded Chows. If they are rescues and there is doubt they may be mixed breed, don't do the survey.

If I knew where a link was, I'd fill it out.
I think it's safe to say that Colonel is PB.
I too, would be interested in knowing how this information will be used.
Anyone know?

Here is the link, for the second time. http://www.offa.org/surveys/survey_chow.html
As for what it's for, nobody has really said. If you look on one site, it would appear they were going to try to use it to go to the Kennel Club in England to say they are making a mistake about changing the breed standard because of health reasons. I think they have already lost that battle though.
My experience with the CCCI is that they just do stuff to make it look like they are trying to make a difference, rarely does anything ever get done. They have been spending money on cancer research for years, and that is one of the least concerns with the breed. It is a problem, but only a minor one. Money would be well spent on one of the more serious problems.
Here is the problem I see, most of these people that are submitting stuff on their dog are members of clubs, and likely breeders. Breeders have already selected what they feel are the best dogs from their litters and kept them, so they should have fewer problems. If you want to get a real idea of the breed health you should be taking a survey from pet owners, because the breeders have put all the dogs that they suspect of having a problem in a pet home.
I think everyone with a fullblooded Chow should still do the survey regardless. And pass it on to everyone you know with a Chow and have them do the survey. My guess is that with the results they have so far, they won't be going to the Kennel Club with any health stats. I think the survey is still very skewed in favor of the good side, I believe it is much worse than it looks so far.

The part about going to the KC, or the fact that they are much worse than they appear?

Both. I've had a look at the results so far and maybe I'm completely silly and not reading this right but they don't appear to be too bad??Red Dragon wrote:The part about going to the KC, or the fact that they are much worse than they appear?

Re: Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE
Some things aren't that bad in the survey, BUT, if you look at category, the number of dogs, and then the amount of dogs with a problem, some categories are very high with regards to problems. These stats are not even close to the stats the OFA has either, they are off by a mile in some areas.Rowlee wrote:Both. Re: Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE
Here is a tip, it might help to look at the results first, that way you can see all the health problems and what category they are in, otherwise you may not report something or not know where to list it.

Re: Chow Chow Survey-PLEASE TAKE NOTE
I took the survey last night and tonight I looked at the results.
it seems to me that a lot of breeders must have filled out this survey.
I have had 6 Chows in the last 24 years and each ones health problems are worst than the last.
bad luck or bad breeding you tell me

It's a trend, the breed is on a downward spiral.
