Amputation of digit

Post by stassia1 »

Good afternoon! We have 2 Chows, Hercules and Monkey. Hercules is almost 8 years old. Monkey is a bit older. She is a rescue, so we are guessing she is between 8-10...Hercules developed a marble sized growth on the top of his knuckle on his right front paw. It is dark in color. It has been there for several months. The vet looked at it in September, doing a cytology along with an exam. Results were inconclusive, but the vet did not seem to think it was worrisome, and we agreed to keep a watch on it. A week ago, it ruptured during our walk, spraying a good amount of blood. After getting the bleeding under control, I called the vet. We were seen several days later. The vet is recommending digit amputation due to the size and location of the growth. Herc has had NO changes in eating, drinking, pooping, weight, etc. After the rupture, he has been licking the wound, reopening it, and causing bleeding. We are keeping triple antibiotic on it and keeping him in a bootie with attached sock to discourage reopening the wound. Just wanted some input...Has anyone had a similar experience, or might advise? We are waiting to speak with vet re: surgery specifics. I am NOT one to run straight to surgery, but this seems the best way to deal with our situation.. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
