Need alternatives to Rimadyl.....

I am going to the vet tomorrow and want to have an idea on what he is talking about..... Chi-Ching is on Rimadyl right now and I really want him on something else, we have just had too many things come up that comes back to the meds not working right....

So, if anyone has any ideas.......please let me know!!

Arthrogen, which is similar to cosequin cq (check spelling) and giving him a chicken based food as it is a natural source of glucosomine.

Thanks....... we give Chi-Ching a supplement liquid gluclosamine and chondriton (sp?) and we feed him Canidae Dry dog food ( http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html ) That has the ingredients on that page...... We soak his food in water, add the g&c and then add the Rimadyl tablet..... he seems to eat it okay that way....

Is he getting enough out of his dog food? He seems to like it and do really well on it....

Hi....Poor Chingers...and poor mommy....
I just moved my lab mix from Rimadyl to Previcox. My vet said she believed it to be much safer. I am not sure about the results yet. Have you tried supplementing with DGP????? It really does help Caity.

I printed out all 4 pages of that article and I am going to bring it to the vet..... I don't see why it can hurt and $2500 vs $6000-$10000 is a big deal!

i am new to this so let me try to answer your question first. YourDogHealth.com has a product called free and easy.... and there is another company that sells something called recovery sa-you need a prescription from the vet for that...rimadyl has a poor history- i think it is worse when it comes to chows. I know that chows have a smaller heart in comparison to their bodies- this is why meds are always problematic with them. I do not know how old or young your chow is- but reducing his/her weight is probably a good start, then going to a supreme diet- either dog food secrets diet(u cook or barely cook meats in meals),evolution dog food diet(mostly vegan with meats on the side), or the innova food diet(meats with veggies on the side).
i know what you are going thru is difficult- there are products for handicappedpets.com online- that might help you. There are braces and wheel chairs. i think most vets or specialists will tell you based on their experience that rimadyl is used as a last resort product. The product does its job- but the returns are diminishing. side affects and adverse affects on organs.
I wish i knew more about your chow- # of walks per day, activity level, and daily caloric consumption. my heart goes out to you and your chow- just from some of your previous posts i can tell your love is great. i would postpone the rimadyl as long as possible but if you do have to use it- remember to do a model set of tests prior to use-blood(liver), and urine(kidneys). you should run these tests within one month of use- to gauge the overall effects of rimadyl on your chow. i hope this helps.

DGP is Dog Gone Pain...it's herbal and it does really help Caity..she is 15.

Hi, Shandi is on Tramadol for her hip pain. My vet will only use the Rimadyl for extreme circumstances and only for a few days because it is hard of the body. We also use a glucosamine. I like the idea of the DGP , I plan to look into it. Good luck with Chi Ching. So cute.

Sullivan takes supplements, tramadol, & Previcox. Of course, she has more than arthritis, but she's doing fine on that combination. We have been checking her blood levels every few weeks (necessary or not, cough cough) and there have been few if any changes. The tramadol is not expensive -- in fact, if you have health insurance for yourself and can claim arthritis type pain -- it can be (also cough cough) very inexpensive. I think it's hard on the stomach so we give Sullivan a pepcid. Tramadol hurts my stomach, but I do have arthritis (for real) so, (cough cough) someone else may be benefiting from my misfortune -- or not.
