Rabies

Post by bama »

I was driving thru my town today and saw signs displayed
in high traffic areas. The sign read:

Door to door rabies vaccine verification
being conducted now!

We must have a case of rabies here or something?
Anyone else ever experience this kind of action
by a municipality?

No, not down here, but it sounds like they must have had a case. No other reason to do door to door....otherwise. And I thought they had pretty much gotten rid of it....

If something like that was going on it would be on the news and in your paper, I'd call you vet and make sure it's not some weird scam of some sort...I know LOL I sound paranoid...but it sounds weird.

I just know it is the law to have rabies vaccines and that they can do door to door inspections. I have never had them come to my door but they were doing it in Helena a while back supposedly.

Since canine rabies is considered eradicated now, they have certain protocols in place to keep it that way and to prevent 'spillover' of the various wildlife strains into the dog population.

We just had a raccoon to dog outbreak here and several of the dogs bitten didn't have vaccines. So had to be put down. Maybe those instances are on the rise and that is causing it. Folks thinking they can do without the vaccine since it is every 3 years now in most places.

I've never heard of that. I do know that animal control puts out rabies vaccination tablets in certain areas.

We had a few rabid bats in Ontario this summer. One woman brought a hurt bat to the wild life centre. She didn't leave her name or address with them. The bat tested pos with rabies. Newspapers mentioned it and the woman was found. She had to have rabies treatment.
