Re: How to brush teeth of Chows
Ok, I'll be firm with him and see how it goes. I'll report back.

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows
Ok. You mentioned that a pin brush would be enough for daily maintenance. The brush I have now is considered a pin brush, right? And for the tangles, I'd need to buy a comb and use water spray when brushing him.
What did you mean by "ridges" earlier regarding the round collars?

Walter at 9 months
Here's Walter at 9 months:
By the looks of him, can you tell if he's a 100% pure Chow? The breeder and his papers tell he is but I just want your professional comments.

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows
Thanks for the clarification.
And just the confirm again, the pink comb you've posted above is the "3rd" tool that you're referring to that you rarely use, right? 1st is the slicker brush and the 2nd is the pin glove.

Oh ok. So the black picture above is a slicker brush. What do you call the pink one you posted?

Re: How to brush teeth of Chows
I have those finger tip brushes and he just doesn't want them. I'm not sure how to introduce it to him but yes I can brush his teeth for a while with canine toothpaste that is strawberry-falvored. He accepts the toothpaste but while I'm brushing with my fingers and he already licked all the toothpas...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows
Thanks for the replies. I'm assuming the black-colored brush above is the rake and the pink is the comb, right? @Rory's Dad Walter only really wears a collar during walks. When he is inside the house he doesn't wear any. I'll try to check for round collars but I'm not really sure if they're availabl...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows
Thanks. What other brushes aside from the slicker brush do you use and what are their purpose? Is the main purpose of the slicker purpose for untangling hair?

Re: How to brush teeth of Chows
Lol, I knew I wasn't the only one! It's just that I noticed that some of Walter's teeth have yellow stains on them which I assume is tartar just like in people. He doesn't have any bad breath though.

How to brush teeth of Chows
I can put toohpaste on my fingers in both hands and then manually massage the external section of Walter's teeth but when I try using his toothbrush he really doesn't like it. How do I keep him calm and train him to want the toothbrush for his teeth?

What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows
Since we got Walter when he was 3 months old, the only brush we used is something like this: http://www.purrfectlypets.co.uk/media/catalog/product/a/n/ancol_wooden_handle_double_sided_brush_cats_dogs.jpg He is now 9 months and his mane is really thick. I noticed that he has a lot of tangled hair in ...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
Kevin, reward training has 100% been proven effective. No doubt Chows can be difficult to train behaviorally, and lead training is particularly hard. Learning what will motivate them is an exercise in itself. If you are onto something, then you should definitely follow through with that. Chows are ...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
That's exactly what I thought. I don't think that removing the reward system is recommended. I'm using it, as positively recommended in our puppy classes, to control Walter by helping him learn commands. It's proving to be effective since I started using it three weeks ago. I was really surprised to...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
No problem. They're definitely pullers and I'm about to have a torn ligament with him, lol. It does seem to be very hard to break but this coming weekend would be our topic regarding loose leash training in puppy class. Our coach did let us bring 10-15 feet of leash and we'll be training with him in...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
@JasonandNat
Thanks for the drawing!
Is that a big knot in the end of the rope to server as a "stopper" for your foot? And how long of a 1-2" thick rope should I need? So if I get it correctly, while walking I handle him by the leash and the additional rope just dangles around?

Switching to new dog food
A quick question: when changing our dog's food and following the standard ratio of old food to new food advertised by taste of the wild (brand of the new food we have), which volume should I base the percentages on? The old food volume or the new food volume? These volumes are different between each...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
OK, first off it's not Walter. As for eating, try some Peptobismal, ShenLung had tummy issues for years and this helped him stay regular. At eight he rarely asks for pink lips anymore. ;) Leash. Any kind. Collar, whatever. Now add a 1-2 inch thick length of rope that will drag behind you several fe...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
I'm definitely committed to raising Walter the good way and I'm being honest to myself. This is my first dog so I will have some mistakes, of course. And yes, I'm currently looking for a professional trainer already and checking the link you gave me, thanks for that. Since it seems you are taking b...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
This is exactly what's happening to me, I think he's not accepting me as a leader.... Where do I start to let him know I'm the leader of the pack? I'm starting to worry because he's already 8 months old now and starting to leave puppyhood. I want to inflict good behavior as much as possible while h...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
@Pinoy51 Thanks for that very informative post, I did learn a lot. I still have Walter's body harness so I'll try and use that instead. Using a body harness would still give me a chance of teaching Walter how to not pull the leash, right? From what I understand, it's just a matter of instilling good...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
Wow, pinch collar for a Chow. What a genius of trainer has suggested that. Most Chows are reacting quite badly if you inflicted pain. I can't imagine to use pain to direct my guys. Someone down in the thread suggested excatly the right thing, stop and communicate with the dog. My rescue Sally was t...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
My first thought was I wonder how long your baby puppy is spending alone. I admit I didn't read all the posts but I did see 11 hours. I dont mean to be horrible but I refuse to sell puppies to people who were out the house longer than four to five hours a day. When mine went to a new home they were...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
When Walter pulls, stop the walk. If he pulls again when you restart the walk, stop the walk. He needs to know that if he pulls, the walk stops - period! Nahkohe's legs would quiver because he wanted to pull but understood that the walk would stop if he pulled again. That's exactly what I'm doing b...
