Re: New member with a couple of questions before adoption.
Every dog has a uniqu character. I have had many dogs...all rescues. Interesting fact that they were all about two years old when we acquired them (or should I say, they acquired us!). All of our rescues found us in interesting ways, the last two being a pure chow and a chow Newfoundland. Our son fo...

Re: Elderly Chow - Quality of life
You might be surprised. Loki's pain meds have done wonders for him. He is on tramadol twice a day and a gabapentin before bed. Chows are very stoic and can mask their pain, so it is important to stay on top of the pain. Loki also receives shots of adequan. Along with arthritis, Loki also has liver d...

Re: Elderly Chow - Quality of life
I am so sorry. I, too, have a soon to be 13 year old chow, Loki. He has many issues, including severe arthritis. Inspite of this, he still enjoys his walks. I know he does have a certain quality of life. He has more good moments, than bad. We have done everything in our power to make him comfortable...

Spider bite???
I had something' strange happen to Loki yesterday. It was a typical morning...daily walk, breakfast, etc...nothing unusual. He always has access to a screened in porch when the weather is pleasant. When I returned home, about four hours later, I noticed that he had what appeared to be a hot spot on ...

Re: Missing Ruby
This is heartbreaking. I am so very sorry for your loss. You gave her a great life and you should have some comfort in that. I have two male chows, 11 and 12. The older chow is having many health issues and we just take it a day at a time, being grateful for each day.

Re: End of life health for Chows
We give Loki four tramadol a day, or two every eight hours. At bedtime he gets a gabapentin which I call "his super pain med". It enables him to have a a good night's sleep and is a great pain manager. He has been on this routine for over a year. He also takes a liver med and thyroid medic...

Re: End of life health for Chows
I am so sorry to her about Gabe's problems. Our male chow, Loki, is also 12 and has a variety of health issues including severe arthritis of the spine and back hip. When we rescued him he needed surgery in his back leg and it has always been a problem for him. That was ten years ago but the last two...

Re: hello from a newbie owner
First of all, thank you for giving this chow a chance. We have rescued two chows and I am grateful for them every day. Your experience reminds me a bit of our male, Loki. It took him a little time to just to his new environment. Be patient...it will happen. We have had Loki now for ten years. He was...

Re: Kidney disease
Yes...that is relatively low. Under 20 percent is good.
Loki is almost 12 and has many health issues..severe arthritis, thyroid issues, liver disease, etc. it has been several years that I have had him on a low protein diet and he is doing quite well.
Good luck!

Re: Kidney disease
Our Loki has liver disease but he, also, needs to have as little protein as possible due to his condition. I avoid beef or red meat. I make him braised chicken with rice and vegetables. I also give him dry food and check the protein content very carefully. Most dry foods emphasize protein but I look...

I can't think of any dog as unique as my chows. There are times, however, I think Loki acts more like a cat...disinterested in most humans, aloof, indifferent...they're amazing!!!

Re: Chow Chow - Agatha from the UK
I am so sorry for all you have been through! How dedicated you are to Agatha! I think a companion is a great idea. We have an 11 year old chow, Loki, who as had his share of medical issues over the last few years. Coincidentally, we also have a Newfoundland named Frisco who is ten. Both are males an...
