The Newfie puppy
Fiona and I were at the dog park today and I see this very large newfie sitting on a picnic table. Thinking to myself that I had seen that exact same setting in a photo Mrs. Tu posted last week of her puppy Maggie, I had to ask the man with her if he also had a black chow. As chance would have it, i...

Re: Furkid Jerky
I don't have a dehydrator but was going to try baking thinly sliced chicken breast in the oven on 200 degrees for a few hours to make some chicken jerkey. I actually wasn't going to use anything but the plain chicken...just make a small batch so I would use it before it went bad. I have boiled unsea...

Re: Dog cloning sparks debate
Without even considering the ethical and moral dilemas that come with cloning, I have several other issues with cloning a pet. First of all, I don't think cloning a pet is the best thing for one's mental health. The circle of life or the laws of nature, what ever you want to see it as follows a proc...

Patti, I would love to see those two together. They sound so cute together. Tess and Fiona will not lead us around, but Tess will come up and give kisses and slam her body against us until we come with her. Now my collie has always done the Lassie thing...come up, bark a few times then walk in the d...

Re: BAD NEWS about Kyra (sorry this is long)Upset
Vicki, I’m so sorry to hear about Kyra. Dogs (most if not all breeds) hide pain until they can’t anymore…it’s just instinct to not show a weakness so it’s not a surprise that it’s been a problem for awhile without you ever knowing. I’m sure she didn’t want to worry you. Health cost are a huge concer...

Here is a chow/wooley mammoth mix. Not a common breed...I think because of the hair  http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w181/aultal/Pets/Picturestofile133.jpg Actually, my opinion is chow/bassett or chow corgi mix. She has short, stocky legs...not chow legs at all. Tess has these perfectly stra...

Re: your chowkidz future????
My family has actually thought of this before. We are all animal people with many pets between us. Fortunately, between me, my three sisters, and my parents, someone would take the animals. Personally, I would want mine to go with my mom and dad or Renae (EnchantedOnyx) because one sister is not the...

Re: How big is your Chow?
I don't know heights of either of mine, but both weight about 44-46lbs. Tess weighed 40lbs for years, never changed. Within the last few years, she has put on a few pounds...she's getting older and is less active (we think she is stealing Tacia's weight because there used to be a difference of 15lbs...

Re: Shaved Chow?!
Millie was shaved down to about 1/2" last Easter after the fight & it's grown back thick with NO problems at all. If Mal was shaved to the skin then she'll need a tee or sunscreen on for protection but will be fine. Millie was far happier last year when she was shaved, loved the summer &am...

Re: Shaved Chow?!
You shouldn't have to worry too much...unless they shaved so short that she gets razor burn. Just watch the sun exposure until it starts to get wooley again. If you are worried about it not growing back... This is Fiona at the beginning of last July http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w181/aultal/Dak...

Deb, I'm sorry to hear about Sullivan's passing. I am honored to have met beautiful Sullivan last fall. Sullivan couldn't have asked for more devoted parents. Re: Allergy
I’m going to agree with it being a food issue, but maybe not like you are thinking. From some of the other issues Coco has experienced recently, it sounds like she has more of a systematic yeast problem instead of simply food allergies. On first glance, systematic yeast problems look like simple all...

I'm so sorry your poor boy is going through this. I posted this a long time ago, but here are some organizations that you may want to check out. Many of them require you apply for a care credit card (something you do have to pay back, but has low interest rate and breaks the payment up into more man...

Re: Do Chows have oil glands on middle of back?
It sounds like your chow could have Seborrhoea Oleosa. There are two kinds of seborrhoea that dogs can devolope, one makes the skin very dry and flaky, the other makes the skin very oily. With the oily condition, the body overproduces sebum the oil naturally produced by the body to keep the skin hea...

Rescue versus breeders…the battle wages on. There is never going to be a winning side. I am sure there are some people who have left because they feel alienated or offended because of the rescue versus breeder discussions, but I can say, I rarely check or participate with the site any more because o...

We got one for Tess a few years ago because she would get mats behind her ears in no time. It was one of the ones with the five or six sickle shaped blades. It seemed like the only thing it did was pull her fur. I have used it on my long haired cat when she is shedding and the loose fur mats, but th...

Re: What temperature can your Chow stand??
With Lowes and HD, I'm sure it depends on the individual stores, but my dad worked at Lowes a few years ago when he first retired and they allowed dogs because so many contractors had dogs that traveled with them to job sites. The contractors obviously couldn't leave them in their trucks, so they al...

Re: Any shampoo to use to loosen undercoat
I have heard the blowers are great for getting the undercoat out. I know of two places around Columbus that have self-service dog grooming stations (dog wash tubs, blowers, grooming table, etc.) You could maybe try the blowers...see if that gets enough of the undercoat out that she wouldn't need muc...

I think even talk shows have moved into re-run season so it may be the same one. She is good about providing updates, so it could be new. I would be extremely happy if it was re-played. It showed the week before I had cable and never did get to see it (although I did see clips from other resources)....

I was thinking there was a monthly flea and tick preventative that also repelled mosquitos. I can't remember the name, but I was thinking it was the one that you can't use if you have cats. I know you don't have cats, so it might be an option.

Kearra should come visit Tess...in the last week, she has caught two squirrels. Nine years, the chow has never caught anything, she sees Fiona catch one rat and now she is queen squirrel killer. What you don't know is she is learning their behaviors, their actions, their routines...one of these days...

Aww, Millie and Mabel would make Martha Stewart proud with their gardening skills. As for the tomato plants, my grandmother has a sheltie that would do just about anything for a tomato. If they really wanted to see a tempremental dog being groomed, they would be more than welcome to try and brush my collie. Tess and Fiona both will let us brush them for hours (okay, Fiona will let me, my mom on a good day) but I've never seen a dog turn into Cugo faster than my sweet, docile collie...

A strange thing about the sunburned fur. Since my family has had Tess, every summer, she would get the sunburnt halo around her head. It would take half the winter to grow out. Well, last summer, Tess spent more time than normal out in the sun. It was sunnier, my sister and I were home more so she c...
