Fiona's very special day

Today is Fiona's very special day. A year ago today she made the trip from Holland MI to Marietta OH to start her new life. It has been a wonderful year, trying at times, but I wouldn't trade a single day. I have some new pictures but they will have to wait until tomorrow.

Metcam

Has anyone had any experience with Metcam for severe arthritis? I'm not concerned with long term effects...the vet put my collie (I know, not a chow) on it, she's 15 and her health is starting to fail quickly, we just want something that is going to make her comfortable for a few more months. She ca...

Re: DOG LEASH RECALL !!!

My mom and dad have one of these for Tess. Knowing it was kind of flimsy, they only use it with Tess because she doesn't put much strain on it (I had a dog sitting client that had cheaper retractable leashes with strong, out of control dogs and was snapped in the hand by a broken metal clasp) but th...

Re: Tess & Me

I have the other black rescue chow named Tess. It sounds like they have a lot in common. I'm sorry to hear about your Tess's cancer. It's difficult to know when something is wrong and not be able to fix it.

Fiona the run-away

She did make sure her momma came with her, but over the weekend my mom, dad and I went out the front door to look at some paint colors my parents were considering for the house. Fiona thought I was leaving, so barrled out the door with us. Fiona has no recall, does not know front yard boundaries...s...

Re: Leroy Is Getting Sooooo Bad....Im Worried :(

I have two that have to just be moved to private rooms when people come over so I completely understand. I don't think either would bite anyone, but it's just not worth the risk. I would suggest keeping a leash by the door. When people come over, it may be easier to put Leroy on a leash, then move h...

Re: Wolfie peeing on beds, couches, chairs, etc

Because of Wolfie's age, one suggestion I have would be to check with your vet about Cognative Dysfuction Syndrome which basically is a canine version of Alzheimer's. One of the more prominent indications is innappropraite urination, especially in dogs with a good history of house training. My colli...

Re: 1,000 dogs rescued - puppy mill closed

Unfortunately, they are not the only small breed puppy mill in the area. I am from Marietta, which is right next door to Parkersburg (actually across the river, but close enough). I know of at least one more fairly large scale puppy mill (no where close to 1000 dogs, but over 100 which is still WAY ...

Re: Ghost doggies?

I had a cat when I was younger who was my baby. She had been with us her entire life, as a family cat, but she was mine and I was hers. Annie was hit by a car shortly after turning two. For years afterward, I would be in bed and feel a cat jump on the bed. I would feel around to see who it was (we h...

Re: Maxwell goes to football practice.

Maxwell definately has you trained well. My family used to take our first chow mix Zoe to the ball fields when my younger sister played. It was her absolute favorite thing. So many different smells around, new sites. Our two now would not enjoy ball fields though. Fiona would have a nervous breakdow...

Re: Cymro hates me putting anything around his neck

I would definitely first make sure nothing is wrong with his neck. Hotspots forming, matted fur, abrasions...if he's been playing with any other dogs recently, no bruising, scrapes etc. If all is fine...then he may just not want his neck messed with. The neck/head is a very vulnerable spot for dogs,...

Re: Big mean chow momma

I had to put a different cover on Fi's dog bed because the one that came with it was just too hot. Now all she wants to know is if anyone knows of a good exterminator because she thinks she may have bed bugs...or maybe just one large bed bug. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w181/aultal/Pets/Fisne...

Re: Dremel users?

I saw the infomercial nail thing and was wondering if it actually worked well or not. Tess chews her nails so has never needed one...Fiona's nails seem to be fine also, but my collie's get very long and she has to be muzzled for us to trim them. The cats are a whole other story. Three people, two to...

Re: My new favorite tool

I've been thinking of buying one for Fiona. I tried one on Tess's coat a few years ago and hated it. The only thing it did was pull her fur, but Tess has a sort of weird coat. She really doesn't have a top coat...it is all the texture of her undercoat. The Furminator tangled in it making for a miser...

Re: Now that Berkley is gone...

There is definitely no set amount of time you have to wait before getting another. When my family lost our first chow Zoe we were completely devastated. My dad swore no more dogs, no room for argument, he wasn't doing it again. Then Tess found us...a week after we lost Zoe . He went from no more dog...

Re: On a Happy Note

Awww, it's great she feels comfortable enough to do zoomies. I'm sure Buddha has taught her well. I don't think Fiona will ever do zoomies. She's been with my family for almost a year and has never done them. She plays, rolls on her food, chases the cat, chases squirrels/bunnies/geese, etc, but no z...

Re: Big mean chow momma

Are dogs have always been welcome on the furniture. Tacia used to love to sleep on the couch when she could still get up on it and in the last two years, Tess has become a complete couch potato. Fiona will not get on the furniture. I have even put her on the bed with me and she looks so uncomfortabl...

Big mean chow momma

When we got Fiona almost a year ago, we never considered getting her a dog bed. Zoe, our first chow had one and never touched it, Tess refused to sleep on one...even my collie thought she was being punished if we just encouraged her to sleep on one when arthritis started kicking in. Fiona had a crat...

Puppy vaccines...opinions really needed.

My younger sister just got a new puppy. We will pretend he has some chow in him  (he's a mix, so just may have some chow, never know). He is 8 weeks old, never had any shots of any kind. Of course the vet is saying booster at 8- 12-16- and 20-weeks. My opinion is that is just way too many shots...

Bear is very pretty. I met Teddy two weeks ago (the chow/golden mix) and he was an absolute wonderful chow boy. Very friendly, escpecially because it was extremely hot and a ton of people walking by/messing with him. Of course he doesn't like cats...and I can't have another pet in my apartment, but ...

Re: HSUS, PETA Make Grab For $8 Billion Trust Fund--Action Alert

Not to start a debate that I have seen get very ugly through other animal rescue site, I would like to offer another view on PETA. To start off, I do not agree with everything PETA does, but they are a radical group and have always been. They pull stunts that more affuential groups could not do beca...

Re: One step forward, two steps back

Years ago when I found Tacia, my collie (okay, when I accidentally hit Tacia with my car  ) I brought her home and told my dad, who was adiment about not getting a second dog, that I just wanted to keep her long enough to make sure there was nothing wrong with her after being hit with the car ...
