Re: Thoughts on Crate Training - Not Crate Training
I have not crate trained my dogs, but know people who do, and would have no problem with it. When Ursa was small, she would search out a "den" to stay in. The last one was behind the Lazy boy recliner. It was covered with a sheet to keep off the cat hair, and the sheet hung down in back gi...

Re: Food aggression help needed!
Start to think ahead and be proactive not reactive....always think through what might happen and slowly it becomes part of the way you think and not any effort at all to lift a bowl of food before letting another dog in or put prized toys out of reach, close a door between two dogs or shut one in t...

Re: Food aggression help needed!
At least for a while, you may have to avoid treats that are large enough to be taken away. Right now, I am careful with handing out treats. Small one bite treats are not an issue, but larger ones could become an issue with my pack. Currently, I am fostering a Chow Samoyed mix, and he wants to assert...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate
There are probably many opinions on that subject. I have a couple of pin brushes that I like to use. I will brush both with the direction the hair grows and against the growth, and tend to concentrate more on areas that will mat on my dogs. My wife likes to take a damp towel and clean their paws whe...

Re: Should I keep my chow puppy
Let's see, I have two chows, three small dogs, three cats and a foster dog. Ursa was raised with the cats from 6 weeks and Malachi was raised with the cats from 12 weeks on. NO problems with cats. That should answer that question. My two do well with the little dogs. I don't have any small children....

Re: Our Chow bit my wife
I am with Rory's Dad. From your description it is difficult to determine the exact circumstances of the biting. Dogs generally have a reason for biting. A 14 month old dog should know better. It is possible that he is testing the limits of what he can do and is trying to assert himself, but without ...

Re: New Member with New ChowChow
Thank you, Sirchow. I had to go see what I had written. True confession, when Ursa and Malachi were little, I would jump in the tub with them for their bath. I figured it would help reassure them that the water was not a bad thing. There would be no room in the tub now. I haven't tried this, but I h...

Re: Help, my chow chows hair wont grow back!
Thyroid could be it. Ursa was loosing hair, and it was her thyroid. It took several months for us to get the right dosage for her and then it was maybe a year for most of her hair to grow back. It is still thin on her tail. It has actually taken about three years for her to finally get her coat back...

Re: Why why why do my dogs enjoy giving me heart attacks?
Jess, having a dog get loose is always a heart stopper. The foster I have can jump our fence, which is just under 4 ft, so I had to borrow a fence charger and run a hot wire along the top. It didn't take but one time for him to learn that it was hot.

Re: New Member with New ChowChow
Some dogs do well with a bath, and some do not. My two do well, and like being toweled off. I have a foster at this time who does not like a bath. He does well with brushing, and I can groom him with the vacuum. Try giving him treats and work to calm him down. Basically, what you have to do is build...

Re: Dog food could be making my chow sick :(
The comment about otitis is interesting. My foster dog frequently shakes his head, but I haven't noticed any issues with his ears. I will dig deeper. Chows are sensitive to diet. I feed a lamb and rice formula because it is what seems to go well with Ursa. I went through several types of food before...

Re: New to Chow World
I am currently fostering a chow Samoyed(?) mix. To to the photo sections and look for "meet Harvey". I also have two chows (see avatar) and had a husky a number of years ago. Harvey talks a lot, which my two chows do not. Malachi, my male, will make a sorta clearing his throat sound when h...

Re: About the get a Chow
Chows have poor peripheral vision, so your children should be informed not to just rush up behind the dog. I typically use verbal cues to help my chows know that I am coming. Strong willed could be an understatement. You will have to definitely be the assertive leader of the pack.

Re: Meet Harvey
The ADT sticker is at chow level so that they can tell that the storm door is closed. I called them up and asked for additional stickers. We had a couple of accidents, so I figured I would help them out. Of course, there is not problem with telling the door is closed. Harvey has put dirty paw prints...

Re: About the get a Chow
That will depend on the dog, the cat and you. My chows ignore the cats, but they were raised with them. Ursa was introduced to cats when she was 6 weeks old, and Malachi was about 12 weeks when I got him. My cats know all about dogs. I have a chow mix foster that wants to chase cats and I have done ...

Re: The “perfect” walk?
The egrets would get Ursa's attention and she would talk about ithem. Turtles would also get some attention. The whole point of the walk in the country is just to exercise the dogs and have them loosely follow on lead. They are pretty good and voice commands keep them more or less in line. I got two...

Re: The “perfect” walk?
I do not allow pulling. A simple change of direction will have them moving better with me. (even if I get nowhere because we spend the first few sessions walking in big circles) As soon as one of the dogs begins to pull I change directions. That changing direction doesn't get you anywhere fa...

Re: Fearful Chow
I would like to hear an up date. Teaming the new dog with your more confident dog should help. I am currently fostering a chow mix brought in as a stray by animal control. My guess is that he was kept tied out with no training. The good news is that he is motivated to fit in my pack, and is highly f...

Re: Going out at night.
Rory's dad has a good description of the situation and some action. Let's face it, you control the resources. Cindy J has a point. You can put him on a lead and control the action. After reading your post, I realized it is like my male and my wife. He will not come in for her at night. He will go ou...
