Re: Won't come back in from walks...
Our chow did the same thing, but in the reverse direction, she would do it in the driveway before we took a walk. She would sit down then roll onto her side, and if I tugged more on her leash she would roll onto her back. It was funny the first time... I tried to coax her with treats, didn't work fo...

Re: Unusual aggressive behavior towards another dog?
When she is hot and lying down, our chow wants to be left alone. I have seen her growl/snarl at other dogs when they got too inquisitive. She is fine lying down but probably feels more defensive when lying down. Even now she will growl at people if she thinks they are going to step on her, we worked...

Re: Walking an adopted Chow mix
My Chow decided months ago that she wanted some more control over our walks. She would sit down, try to back out of her collar, etc. when we would get to the porch, or driveway and sometimes both! If I could get her past the driveway everything was fine, we could go walk for a mile or more with no t...

Re: Snapper Chow, biter chow, agreesive chow?
Everyone seems to have pretty good advise here and our Puppy was nippy at times too. We told her her no, and would put her in the kitchen, behind a baby gate and then ignore her. To this day if we tell her "I'll put you in the kitchen!" she stops doing whatever she is doing... We also trai...

Re: my chow chows growls at me
The first time our chow snarled at us was to defend a raw hide bone I had given her (her first). I wound up pinning her down with one hand and removing the bone with the other. I then gave it back later after, then tested to see her reaction. If she growled or resisted at all, I would take it away f...

Re: Chow eating time
We have kibble available most of the time, and usually our chow waits until we get home to eat... I think that feeding once per day might lead to eating too fast because the chow is hungry. I think chows get fat when they don't walk, rather than over eating. Everyone else I know lets their chows hav...

Re: Socializing problems
Patience is needed above all else, our chow does not do well when people do the stick hand out to sniff thing. If the stranger is really confident and just pats her it is fine. If the stranger is at all hesitant then she will shy away. Usually takes her at least 30 seconds to a minute to be ok with ...

Re: QUestion about feeding
We have always just left our chow free access to dry kibble. She walks at least 3 miles a day so I don't worry about her weight too much. She is nearly one year old now and about 62 pounds, but you can still feel her ribs under the fur.

Re: Part Goat, Part Chow
I heard a commotion in our living room one day and went to investigate. Our chow Dora was taking kleenex out of a box one by one and chewing them up. She looked really proud of herself too! We eventually got her to leave the toilet paper alone, thank goodness, but she goes crazy if she can get ahold...

Re: I need sure-fire games for bored chow
Does your chow not like the snow and cold, or is it you? My chow has never seemed to mind the snow or cold (at least down to about 4 degrees) and we still go on walks twice per day. It tires her out really quick if there is new snow and she walks through it, rather than where it is plowed. I took he...

Excited Chow Sneezes
My wife recently was away for a whole week and when I picked her up at the airport our chow (who was in the car) got so excited she went into a bit of a sneezing fit! I have seen one other chow do this when I would get out his leash to take him for a walk, do any of your chows do this?

Our chow, Dora, does ok off leash, but I only let her off when we are somewhere with few to no cars. She is not good at all about coming straight to me if there is anything more interesting to look at/chase/inspect, but eventually comes back. I always giver her affection or a treat when she comes ba...

Re: Does your Chow heel?
I can get my Chow to walk beside me most of the time. If I start being insistent with the leash she will go where ever I want her to with not much effort. When she is off leash in an area she knows she will go out in the woods and then circle back to me every few minutes. She constantly checks to ma...

Re: Toy issues to throw or not to throw
Our chow will play fetch, but only with the toys she knows. We have some tennis balls, Kong Wubbas, and monkey. We can ask her to go get any of these and she will trot around the house and find the toy and bring it over. I taught her to do this when she was a puppy. The funniest thing is that when s...

Do either of you walk this dog much? If so does he pull the whole time or does he walk by your side. More exercise may make doing everything else easier with this dog.

I would not worry that you are walking your chow too much... Our younger chow was getting two 30 minute walks a day and at least 3 miles a day. Now she is on a shorter regimen because she just got fixed and is getting really crazy with less walking. I can't wait for her to be good to go on longer wa...

Re: Can't take off leash
I have been working with my 6 month old chow for a few days with behaving off leash. So far she will follow closely if we are on a trail and within sight otherwise. I have trained her to come back if she strays too far when I blow a whistle. It took all of three repetitions for her to get it, I foun...

Re: Why did you get a chow?
My Fiance really has always wanted a dog. I never used to like dogs, but some friends of ours had a well behaved boxer and I saw that dogs could be fun. Some other friends of ours had us dog sit their Chow for a month one year and I liked him immediately. He had lots of personality. We looked for ch...

Re: 2 Female Chow Chows advices and agressive behavior
Do they growl at you if you take their food away while eating? If so work with them on reinforcing that the food comes from you. If they try to get each other's food, take it away from both of them until they calm down. You may have to be very patient.
