Re: Family with young kids...is a chow right for us?
I would highly recommend a chow under certain circumstances... I adopted my Coco from the Philadelphia SPCA a year ago. She is the most docile/friendly chow anyone has ever met. Sure, she goes crazy when the mailman puts the mail through the mail slot, but I never worry about her with kids (and we a...

Looking for a New Vet--What to Consider
I've been taking Coco to the vet up the street for about a year. They are nice and reasonable, but I haven't been thrilled with their service. They are more of a low cost clinic, and while it is great they are within waking distance, i always leave feeling like I've paid an office visit fee but have...

Itchy Skin--Dermodex Mites?
Hi All-- As you may know, Coco suffers from itchy skin from time to time. She is generally an itchy dog--allergic to beef and chicken and had a variety of skin issues when adopted from the SPCA including secondary infections from her food allergies. For the last year (I adopted her in 1/2013), she h...

Supplement with homemade protein?
Hi All-- It would nice to be able to supplement Coco's kibble with some homemade protein--ground pork, lamb, bison, venison, turkey, tuna, shrimp, etc. Id like to be able to mix half ground protein (cooked and not raw) and half kibble. Has anyone done this? Will half complete kibble and half protein...

Feeding Raw Bones?
Hi All-- I've been looking into natural chew toys for Coco, which can be a little challenge because she is allergic to beef and chicken. She does enjoy pig ears and split antlers. Local pet shop told me they could order raw lamb femurs from Nature's Variety Instinct Raw. I ordered a two pack to try ...

Grain Free Kibble?
Hi All-- I recently switched Coco to a grain free formula. She tends to have unidentified itchy skin issues, so I thought I'd try it for a few months and see if it made a difference. I just went to the pet store and read all the ingredients and tried to pick the best/most reasonable one. I got Canid...

Chewing Front Legs--Anxiety, Allergies?
Hi all--hoping to get a little problem solving here... I've had Coco about 10 months. When I first got her from the SPCA, she had some bare spots on her front legs. At the same time, she had untreated food allergies that affected her skin/ itchiness. It all cleared up. She is allergic to beef and ch...

Re: Vote for Coco & Help Raise Funds For the Local Shelter
image.jpg Hey all--the calendar is for sale! It is $20 and you can customize it as to what month it starts at. Coco is "Miss April"! The cost is $20 but almost all the money (other than cost) goes to support Philadelphia's "pound", which is a great organization, has a really tou...

Thoughts on Entropion Surgery
Hi All--Was at the vet recently for my chow I adopted in 1/203. The vet determined that she has entropion of the lower eyelid of one eye. I did noticed that she had been runny in that eye, and thought it could be entroprion, but she also has bad allergies, so I wasn't sure. I asked if there was corn...

Flea Allergy? Help?
I am having the worst problem with my Coco. She is allergic to fleas, and I haven't any idea where she might get bitten. She is on flea/tick medication, gets Capstar when I notice her super itch, and, I live in the city so she is only walked on the sidewalk and in some grass and my house has all har...

Re: Photos of your dogs
In discussing average/every day chow activities, I'd love to hear more about non-show ring chow activities. For example, I need to get my Coco AKC canine good citizen to get her covered. I am sure this isn't unique to my insurance, and it would be great to hear about other's experiences. I'd also lo...

Re: AKC Registered Chows, unique names
Hi - I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've asked this question before and have never gotten an answer. Does the AKC/CCCI have DNA testing? As in, is it possible to identify a dog within the recent past by DNA test? I've been involved in equine rescue breed organizations before, and you'd be s...

Re: Vote for Coco & Help Raise Funds For the Local Shelter
I am happy to report that Coco ended up in the top 12, which enables her to be featured in the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Team's (city pound) 2014 Calendar! I'll be sure to post the link to the calendar when it goes on sale. I can tell you from having Coco in the city, I meet so many peopl...

Re: Does anyones Chow do this??
Coco doesn't do that after she eats, but she will sometimes greet me when I get home and then run off and get a toy and bring it right to me. It almost seems like she is so excited, she has to express herself with a toy.

Vote for Coco & Help Raise Funds For the Local Shelter
Hello all, Coco, my rescue chow chow, is participating in a contest to help raise funds for the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Team (city pound). ACCT has a tough job--in the summer, they can take in over 100 pets every day! Those dogs are either owner surrenders, strays, or cruelty cases. ACC...

Re: Chow Abuse
Wow, this sounds like a difficult situation. First, I'd want to go over there daily to check on the dog and make sure it has food, water, etc. Then, if you wanted to try something before calling the authorities, maybe you could put your anger aside and try to find a way to make it "safe" f...

Re: Picture of Coco
Thanks all for the feedback! It's been a rewarding challenge having her. When I first got her, her coat and skin was obviously a mess and she didn't know any commands. After six months, she knows sit, lay down, paw, other one, stay, wait, and "not your turn" (my made up command for when so...

Re: Spray On/Leave In Conditioner?
Do you use section the hair and then use the rake/comb? I have a few brushes and a furminator but I can never get all the hair matter down by the skin out and the groomer always can! I don't section the hair off though, so maybe that is it? I use the blue buffalo basics salmon and potato--i think it...

Thank you! She has food allergies (cause of her poor condition before), so she is on salmon food. Her coat is so shiney, I am always telling myself to have more salmon!! I haven't seen another one in the city. A fair number of people have told me they used to have a chow, and one guy told me he has ...

Re: Picture of Coco
I tend to think she is purebred as well. I can't imagine what else she'd be mixed with! She is a pretty girl--I get stopped, on average, 4-8 times a day (no joke) from people talking about how cute she is, about chow chows, etc. She is a great ambassador for the breed because she loves all people an...

Re: Chow's personality
I'm on my first chow so no expert at all, BUT, I adopted her as an adult from the SPCA, so I knew what I was getting personality wise. She was about 2.5 years old when I adopted her. I got a good report from the staff there (loves and is submissive to people, alpha with other dogs), and did my own t...

Here are before and after pictures of Coco, a spayed chow I adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA in Philadelphia in 1/2013. She was listed as a chow mix, but everyone that I've spoken with thinks she is purebred. What do you think? Before: 8377949699_ec5738e0cf_z (1).jpg 8377948961_4cfa5b1b99_z.jpg Af...

Just to reiterate, I'm not looking for something to make Coco's coat shiney but something to help lubricate and protect it from all this grooming! Thanks!
