Ever since it dipped below freezing, Jasper has gone outside every chance he gets and just hangs out there, lying on the cold pavement. It makes me wonder if he has been miserable all this time, until it got freezing. I wonder if he is annoyed that we turn the heat on in the house? It seems like he ...

I think it's a good idea to be on HW preventative in Southern California, but it's not as bad as it is in the South. I'm from LA and we never had our dogs on HW preventative. Here, it's rampant. Almost all the Hurricane Katrina dogs who ended up in rescue were positive. Basically, if you get a stray...

Regarding the preventative, if they are positive and they take the daily HW preventative, it can kill them. The monthly is OK.

And Thank You for your replies!!

I didn't know about the situation with the test either and I have been rescuing dogs for a long time. So... now I know. Apparently, if the dog is an adult and you don't know if he has been on preventative, if you get a negative test you need to test again in 6 months. If you have had the dog on Hear...

Jasper is HW positive

Now what? Sorry I have been off the board for a while. Thank God, business has been good. As many of you may know, I acquired Jasper in Feb. from an elderly lady friend who passed away. We tested all her dogs around Jan. to prepare them for adoption. They had never been on preventative, but only 1 w...

$23 is a deal! As you may remember, I have been researching this for our babies after coming home to a disaster after having left them at home with a sitter. Some of the places with the TV and all were $45 a night in Dallas even, where most things are pretty cheap compared to the rest of the country...

Update and thank you guys -
My Vet met the prices on Fosters & Smith, so I was able to save a lot of money on the drugs and not worry about whether they were fake or not.

Maybe your vets will do this? It is worth a try.

Oh hey, fostersmith.com has it for $2.95.
I am worried about the counterfeits, too, but Dr. Foster and Smith have been around for a long time.

My vet does meet the internet prices, so I should be able to just get it from him anyway.

Thank you SO MUCH!!

Wow, thanks for the advice! This one is really cheap- http://www.discountpetdrugs.com/baytrilbybayer.html Anyone ever use them? I thought it was strange that they don't have a mailing address or street address on their site. I gather that they are in California from their sales tax info. Lucy's issu...

Place for less expensive prescription drugs?

Lucy is having to be on antibiotics long-term again, and they are $4.08 a pill. Baytril is the only one that works, and unfortunately it's not available in human form which usually makes it cheaper. Our vet used to get them for us through a compounding place, which saved 25% but the compounding plac...

For the Water Hole Bowl - look in your yellow pages for "Recreational Vehicle (RV) parts and accessories", they usually carry the Water Hole Bowl. It didn't make Jasper any drier, but it works great in the RV since it's close quarters and if you kick the bowl the water does not slosh out. ...

Jasper is the flea vector in our house. There is no place for them to hide on the Pit Bulls, but now they are getting them from Jasper. Everyone is on Frontline now and it seems to be working with no side effects.

I clip my PBs nails myself, but I let the groomer do Jasper. He'd never had his nails clipped because he used to wear them down at his old house. The groomer does it so fast that Jasper does not realize what is going on, so it's less stressful for him. If I do it, I take like 10 minutes per toenail ...

You don't have to do a special class in order to take the test. It's all on-lead too. The AKC website has more details on the test and I believe you can search for places to take it. Before we took the test I had basic and advanced obedience training, and got together with a friend and her dog and w...

Wow, Special does a lot of tricks! Jasper's new trick is to lie on the flooor like a rug. Oh, wait, he does that all the time. He is not as active as some of your Chow Chows! VTChow - If your dog has what we call "shutup-itis" you can teach them a trick that is incompatible with barking. A...

brag: Jasper speaks on command!

I keep forgetting to tell you all this - Jaspers' big weakness is hot dogs. His original mom used to buy giant boxes of them at Sams Club for all her dogs. I had forgotten about this til I got a free one and gave it to him and he almost bit off my finger. He usually takes treats like a cat. So, I am...

Poor Chuy and Rogan! I know how fastidious Chows are, so that must have been so hard for them! That is the kind of thing I am afraid of. Jasper is pretty good with strangers. He is still Chow-like, but I am not too worried about him biting anyone. Lucy got really sick again. This is not unusual sinc...

What do you do with your Chows when out of town?

Of course, we take our babies with us whenever we can! We just took a 4 day trip for a family reunion, too far and too high to take the trailer. I don't want to bore you with the details but we have a petsitter who has been coming over for years, yet all 4 dogs had nervous breakdowns. Jasper clawed ...
