Re: Help with dog food for my chow with sensitive skin
Chows are prone to skin allergy. You must be choosy in selecting their dry food. Cassie never had anything like bald spots. I would look at her nose, if she’s allergic to her dog food she’d scratch it until sometimes it would bleed. Time to change food.there was a time I shifted her to home cooked m...

Re: CHOW CHOW BRED CONFUSING
Possibly. Or any dog breed with erect ears. The behavior of a chow when mixed varies. But they do have a tendency to bite with no warning, so keep that in mind when going out with her, keep her at all times on leash and warn strangers from stroking her. I reckon she’s a happy pup. But don’t let your...

Re: My chow bites/snap when I try to comb her
You let her play with the comb for a minute or so. Take it away, give her a treat and brush her gently and say “good dog”. If she bites again, stop it and don’t reward her. Find another time within the day when she’s relaxed and playing with a toy. That’s good timing. Repeat it everyday and in a few...

Re: Why do chows have so bad reputation?
Resource guarding can trigger aggressive behavior as you have seen. You must be aware of it and tell all people sharing the house with you to watch out for it. Take a different route until the object has been taken away. We take away the item being guarded and reward with a treat. Bloom (our chowmix...

Re: CHOW CHOW BRED CONFUSING
Hello Allan, based on your chow’s photo, she’s a mix. Look at her ears and her tail. If you live in the Philippines, more bad news for you as the breed’s been degraded by unscrupulous breeders. It was different 10 years ago than now. Now, a lot of mixed chows are being passed off as “quality” chows....

Re: Chows in the rain
Hi. I'm from the Philippines. Using a very big umbrella is the best that you can use of course for rain showers. No problem at all if the temperature hovers at or below 37 degrees Celsius (100F), I am sure he will not overheat in the rain for 20 minutes while in it (raincoat). You will remove it onc...

Re: My girl had a grand mal seizure
I am so sad to hear your chow has such. She will have it forever BUT can be lessened by medication. I hope you will not breed her as it can be passed on to her pups and grandpups. I can't help but reflect on the fact that such condition is unheard of in my country's native dogs. I wonder if it has s...

Oh well that is a misunderstanding Rory's Dad. I was stumped when the OP replied something about coat color.
Smooth = short haired
Rough = long haired
Both has what we call double coat though.

Re: Question About Interacting With A Chow
If you do not need a seeing dog or a guide dog, and if you just need a companion dog who will protect you from intruders, and do not need a lap dog, Chows are for you. They generally keep to themselves, but will stay with you and would not mind if you forget about him being there. They would always ...

Not an expert on this but check out this link http://www.xin-feng.nl/en/550e-chowcoat.html
I would prefer a smooth coated chow than a rough one. I don't do shows. If you do show, you'll be better off with a rough coat. they win most of the time (I guess)

Sorry to scare some of you but I was just stating a possibility. Re: Do puppies look like their parents?
Thanks Rory's Dad. Been a while. Yes it is (Mendelian). BTW, I recently interbred Cassie to our local native dog. Reason: 1. I like to have additional companions since Blue passed away. 2. Cassie would not mate naturally with any other chow. She'll have temper flare out even at the height of estrus/...

Re: Chow + Children
The dog should not be allowed to go near the baby until about 18 months. You can even if the baby is 8 months only, IF you are carrying the baby but only for seeing and not for touching or sniffing (face to face) as I deemed it not necessary. The chow can smell the baby's feet. The dog will get used...

Re: Chow + Children
I think it is doable even with two year old chows. I have known someone have a baby but had chowdrens. Be cautious always, put gates between the baby and the chow. Don't leave them alone unattended. Soon in 5-6 years time when the baby grows at that age, they would get along. Do not throw caution in...

Re: I'm really sad, please help. (Breeder situation)
I am sorry you feel that way. But puppies are not born into this world tailored-fit to our preferences or wishes as if they can be designed. The advance deposit you made cannot guarantee that also. You are naive by believing the breeder when he promised you a male rough coat pup. How else will he kn...

The treatment is NOT harsh and IT has no side effects at all. I recommend you listen to the veterinarian. This kind of treatment can be as long as 6 months. Then you maintain oral tablets every month from thence

Re: Do puppies look like their parents?
See the Mendelian chart.
Of course the pup is bound to inherit the features of the parent dogs. My dog got her color and facial expression from her mom, but her over-all look, she got from her cream colored dad.

Hi! I'm from the Philippines too. I see nobody have replied to you yet and I am only here every once in a while. Owning a chow is a delight. 8 years old is nearing senior age. You have to be ready for the medical costs he/she can rack up from visits to the vet. Also, have him/her visit your other dog or vice versa and see how they bond or not before you take the plunge.

Re: Help with getting two chow chows!
If you have two dogs already (and what do you mean by "part-time"?), I would recommed to get JUST ONE(1) chow pup. Chow's temperament is not the same as most dog breeds, they wanted their own space most of the time. When they keep to themselves, they dont want other dogs to invade that spa...
