Re: Cause of Undercoat Not Filling In?
My 4 yr old male did the same thing. We have had a very hard winter and he has a summer type coat. Winter undercoat never came in. His mane is also horrible (looks like cotton) and his tail is very sparse. I have no idea what is causing this either. No scratching or dandruff. He is an indoor kinda g...

Re: Please help!
Well first off, you don't shave or close cut a chow. They have their coat for a reason. Keeps them cool in summer and warm in winter. If you have indeed shaved her, that is why she is out of sorts...she's miserable. She is suseptible to sunburn, bug bites, etc. She is defenseless to the elements, th...

Re: My Chow having cow hock like hind legs
I'm not quite sure what you mean, except maybe describing very straight legs. My Shy has very messed up hind legs. Had patela luxation as a pup, had surgery and now her leg twists outward. Her legs are so straight that she appears double-jointed when she walks. Folks think she is in pain and I worri...

Re: Always barking at people walking by
My male only barks when necessary. My female curls up at the bottom of the stairs off the deck and "talks" to nothing but the cars passing by. She is just a bit odd I have been unsuccessful to find a solution other than bringing her inside.

Re: Barking
Sirchow, you get exactly what I'm saying. Shyann has been quite all day and right now whe is out there howling and barking like a lunatic. She can hear those people in their apartments. Can't wait til spring to get that fence. It's a jungle on that side of the yard in the summer but the fence is nee...

He's beautiful. Huskie/Chow mix is very pretty. Yes Chows are talkers and so are the Huskies. Looks like you have a great dog on your hands!!

Re: Butt wiggles
My chows wiggle the same way. Especially the one with a stub for a tail. Truffles, we calls those loops "zoomies". They all do them and what fun they are. Chows are definately unique.

Re: Barking
Thanks Everyone for the suggestions. My Shyann is a bit different than others. She has very bizzare behavior. She will become skiddish for no reason, bark at the moon, pretend she can't hear you or doesn't know her name, or she'll stick to your side all day, sit in her dad's lap for long periods of ...

Re: Barking
Thanks guys. I would never us a shock collar on a chow. That is just not done. I guess I should explain that Shy is an odd duck. She came from the same (horrible) breeder that Coal came from. We got lucky with him, he is awesome and very gently. Shy gets away with murder with him. Shy is deformed an...

Barking
Hey All, I am having a heck of time with Shyann barking after dark. The colder it gets, the more she hears and the more she barks. Shyann barks at everything, Coal is very selective. He stays in the house most of time and Shy is out most of the evening. I make them come in about 8pm because I don't ...

I never have had a problem with leaving them alone as long as you spend good quality time with them when you are there.

Hi,
My female dog pants heavily in the morning when she has to go out. My male can go forever without going potty.

Re: Wanting to get a chow, but have a few concerns...
You didn't really finish the story. How long did you have him after the protective behaviour started and did it get any better? You are also talking about an adult dog getting close with you pretty fast. You were his new toy. It seems like he is a well adjusted dog that probably meant no harm, just ...

Re: Thinking about getting a chow chow pup....
I personally don't think being alone for the amount of time you speak of is a big deal. When we first got Coal, 10 weeks, my husband had a terrible accident the following week. Coal was alone most of the time for several weeks. He sure was happy to see people when they came to let him out and when I...

Re: New chowchow mix owner
Welcome to the Chow world. It's a bit different than the other dog worlds. Please take time to read alot of the posts here in this forum. You will see that all our furkids are so much alike and yet so different than other breeds. A chow/owner relationship is built on trust and respect. They are easy...

I forgot about socks. Shy would steal them and chew the toes straight off. We have been putting them up high for so long I had forgotten. She is a crazy licker, feet, fingers with rings. Crazy chows!!!

Is Your Dog a Thief?
Following along with the strange behaviour post, does anyone else's dog steal stuff. My Shy will come in the house, walk over to the toy bed, give you the sideways glace, snag a toy and run outside. It is so funny, one of her many quirks. She isn't a playful dog with people, but when she wants to pl...

Re: strange behaviour
If one or both of my chows aren't always following me around ... that is strange behaviour. She just loves you and probably wants to go for a walk after being denied her daily outings. Mine do that also, and talk up a storm. Just one of their lovely traits! That's my two cents.

My Short-tail Chow Shy
Hi all, As you know from previous posts, my female Shy had to have her knee repaired about 9 mos. ago. She did great with that surgery and recoved completely. This week she came up lame again. Wouldn't put any weight on the leg, so off to see the surgeon who did her knee. What a wonderful vet he is!...
