Run Away Chow
Have any of you successfully dealt with the roaming instinct of your chows? Every one I have ever had was an opportunistic runner, and of course, "stop" "stay" etc is as useless as dancing a jig when they are off. Any thoughts? Yes, we do have a fenced yard, but I would love to l...

Thought I Would Update on Cricket
Cricket most decidedly calmed down after the nuetering. I also came to a realization that when people were coming in, they were...sort of towering over him while trying to pet him. None of my other chows reacted like this, but Cricket was definitely displeased with this and would warn with a growl. ...

Re: Chow verses the pit bull
Here in MD it is well known that the "breeders" of pitbulls (if I can even call them that) that are bred to fight, go from yard to yard stealing dogs just to fight, and their favorite dogs to steal are...you guessed it, chows. Has something to do with the way the pits bite at the scruffy h...

Re: chow chow bad groomer by petco
I always have to warn groomers about the "lion cut." I don't like short hair on the body, a mane, and a ball on the tail!!!! I just tell them to give him a "puppy clip" and instruct them to make all parts of the body the same length. You need to be very specific with chow cuts, I...

Do Your Chows Sulk and Mope?
Every chow I ever had sulked when something didn't goes his way. They would walk off a little way, then sit where they knew you could see them with their backs turned to us. Cricket hadn't shown this until I got a little tougher with him, now he is doing it too. My mom always said "they g...

Re: Who Took My Sweet Chow and Replaced Him with THIS??
I hadn't thought about it. I will ask her. I also am looking into enrolling Cricket into a dog training class, one that uses positive re-inforcement over force. The vet was a nightmare this AM...the first tech came over, sat next to me, and Cricket went right up to her and let her pet him. The one t...

I also wanted to add that Duke is failing and I don't think he will make it through summer. His loss will be felt by everyone, he is a very special dog. We were hoping to imprint some of his ways on the new pup before we lose him forever. But if a puppy only has Cricket to look at for a role model.....

Re: Who Took My Sweet Chow and Replaced Him with THIS??
Thank you! Sadly, I had already paid for the pup and she told me a month ago the deposit is non-refundable. I will be keeping a CLOSE eye on the new pup, never had problems mixing a new dog into the pack with the others, but Cricket is a little different than they were. I have about 2 more weeks bef...

Who Took My Sweet Chow and Replaced Him with THIS??
I have had chows my whole life, and with the exception of the one I recently lost, have never dealt with a chow being a "typical" chow (except for the running part). The one I lost last month was a fear biter, not aggresive; actually, he was a fear "growler." I have had Cricket s...

Hello From MD
I just stumbled across this site. Who knew there are others obsessed with this magnificent and misunderstood breed? Growing up , I had chows in my life, so when I went out on my own, I had to have more chows. My DH is also in love with the breed now, though he will always love his German Shepherds. ...
