Whining

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but everything has been great with McKenzie. She's adjusted very well so far and is even doing great at her basic training class. The only minor problem that I wish I could fix is her whining. She started doing it about a week ago, normally at the...

Re: Back from the vet

Thanks for your post! I was just about to reply to your other one asking what the results were. Wow, a whopping 3.5 lbs. That's crazy. Maybe you should help her jump right into the huge food bowl! For some reason, that picture reminded me of a little kid thinking that they would fall into the toilet...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie (more added)

Thanks guys! The neighbor's dog thought so too yesterday! She was doing well on our normal potty walk and so we got back to the bottom of the driveway and she started hopping to the right like c'mon one more time! So I was like hmm that medicine might be kicking in well by now so we did one more rou...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

Well she likes the rope but she just licks it or tugs on the stringy ends. She tries to pull pieces of the yarn out of the rope. If I cover the ends with my hands to play with her, she just licks it until it's sobbing wet. She doesn't like the squeakers. We walked her around the store to pick stuff ...

Re: Heartworm Questions

So she's only been on the medicine for 2 days and she's already got more energy and can walk longer. While putting clothes away in my closet last night, she found my slippers. She carried them over to her dad with this happy walk that I had never seen before. We laughed and took them from her. She d...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

I just posted to the health forum about her vet visit. I have a few pics of her playing with her toy. I'll try to get them up later.

Re: Heartworm Questions

Ok, so the vet said he does think she has an upper respiratory infection so he gave her antibiotics. He also gave us antibiotic eye drops just in case. He wants to see if the URI clears up (to confirm what he thinks). He thinks the URI is causing the drippy nose and breathing so he's hoping that bec...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

She allowed me to do a little bit yesterday. I didn't want to push her and make her nervous about it so I figured I'd just do one foot at a time to get her used to it. She had to problem with me holding her foot, I think she just thought that I was playing with her. I had my fiance distract her face...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

Do you think regular scissors would work? Or do you think they might tug on it or not cut it cleanly? She lets me do whatever I want to her but the first couple of times she saw the brush, she thought it was a game. After I finally got her, she realized that it felt good and lets me do it sort of ea...

Re: Need a computer gu-ru....

I work in the computer industry but have not ever actually seen or tried this, especially on a laptop or desktop monitor. I have however, heard of people dropping their cell phones in the pool, toilet, etc and that happening to the screen. Try googling what to do when you drop your cell into water. ...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

Yes, it is very exciting to see how she changes, even day to day! We've been slowly increasing the amount of Nutro into her Purina :ick: because that's what she was eating at the shelter and I didn't want to upset her stomach. She doesn't have diarrhea anymore and her coat is much shinier and you ca...

Re: Growling at people in elevator, barking in hallway

I suggest reading the how to guidelines at the top of the training forum. There is some really good info there. I think it addresses most if not all of her behaviors and how to react. If you still need help after that, let us know. But you could try putting a gentle leader harness on her to keep her...

Re: Heartworm Questions

Yeah, I'm guessing part of it is the heartworm making her tired while her body fights it. I think it is causing her breathing problems though, well that combined with heat. It only happens outside. When she did play with me one day in the house she did pant a little but she took a few deep breaths a...

Re: Heartworm Questions

The shelter tested her in march and the test was positive for heartworms so they considered that they treated her by giving her the preventative. They did no injection of treatment into her heart. They then retested her with us there on Saturday 9/20 and said it was a light positive now so they said...

Re: Heartworm Questions

Well the banfield vet did a physical exam and said everything including the sound of her lungs and heart were normal except that she has some tartar on her teeth. They immediately jumped the gun to say that she'd need 3 series of the injections because she tested positive in March so she's had to ha...

Re: Heartworm Questions

Thanks jacqui, I did google it, that's how I got the idea that maybe I shouldn't be walking her so much. I guess it makes more sense that she's a little overweight now. I'm taking her tonight just to get more info so that I can focus my attention with the real vet. When I tried to make her an appoin...

Heartworm Questions

McKenzie tested positive for heartworm at the shelter on March 12. They tested her again Saturday before we took her home and they said "she's a very light positive." Does anyone know what that actually means? She's going for an exam tonight but I'm wondering what I should expect. How much...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

So right after I posted that I haven't heard her bark yet, she fell asleep and apparently was having one heck of a dream. She was kicking her legs and making these cute soft little woofs. So that's a start. I definitely see improvement with her every single day so I'm looking forward to things!

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

Well the last person she was with obviously taught her that she wasn't allowed to touch anything in the car except the floor in the backseat and that she wasn't allowed in the house so we had to get someone from the shelter to put her in the car (she wouldn't let me pick her up yet). Then we had to ...

Re: Pics of my new chowgirl, McKenzie

Yes, her face is adorable. I don't know if you can see it in the pics but she has this V shape that her fur makes right in between her eyes. It's really cute. Now, I just hope that her fur comes in nice, she has a few spots where the fur hasn't even started growing back yet. I can't wait for her to ...

Re: Optimal Weight For Full Grown Chows

McKenzie is 48 lbs but she's actually overweight. The shelter gave her a huge bowl of about 8 cups of kibble and just added to it everyday so I think she ate out of boredom. I think she needs to lose 6 to 8 lbs which she probably will with all the walking we're doing, and she really enjoys her walks...
