Re: Need help with keeta's behavior
The odd thing is that he's not really into attention. Even before the baby, he just wanted to be left alone except to get food. He would take a few minutes to decide if he wanted to go outside and would lay at the couch. He just didn't start the growling and snapping until a couple months into the p...

Need help with keeta's behavior
Hi all! I've been away for a long time but I really need help! Keeta's behavior is out of control and I'm at my wit's end. I now have a (human) son. When I became pregnant, keeta started to change. He forces himself to lay against the couch. If you're sitting above him and move, the couch cushion mo...

Re: Fur falling out around nose
We changed his food back in January and he's had the same bowls since August. He is getting an allergy shot every 3 weeks.

Fur falling out around nose
The fur around Keeta's nose appears to be falling out and the skin is leathery and wet just like his nose. Does anyone know why this might be happening? Here are some pics for comparison: 1) September 2009 http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4038/4590652850_0d6a7c656a_o.jpg 2) April 22, 2010 http://farm5...

Re: Growing out a shaved Chow
Both of our chows were shaved down from the shelter (all the way to the skin so badly that they were nicked all over). We just had them on good food and gave them fish oil. We used a shampoo with fatty omegas too until it came in much thicker (every 2-3 months).

Re: Anybody seen the movie, "Hachi" yet?
I loved the movie. Very few (like 3) movies have made my fiance and I cry. Two of those, Hachi and Marley and Me, you've all mentioned. Even my fiance agreed that the reason it made us both cry is because now we know what the loyalty and companionship feels like. We're both going to be a mess when w...

Re: Tippsy was attacked tonight...
Hi Jess, I'm just now seeing this. I'm so sorry that Tippsy got attacked and you had to kick it. I'm really glad that she's okay though. We had a fight go down while walking Keeta. A large bully mix attacked Keeta. Joey was able to pick him up because the other dog just got more aggressive and whatn...

Re: Names...
Kenzie and Keeta were already named. We were told that both already knew their names well. Keeta did but we actually wound up teaching Kenzie her name. She does ignore the "Mc" part so I do believe in the 2 syllable thing now. I do like how their names mesh well but I get tongue tied somet...

Re: Very Oily Fur
Keeta's fur is very oily. When we first got him, he itched all the time. After many vet visits, $, and WEEKLY baths, we found out that he has severe allergies to oak, dust, bahia grass and a few other things. He's started allergy injections in January and there's already less oil although he continu...

Keeta absolutely will not go in a crate. Since I've been home, I'm keep him confined. He's been sleeping most of the night away though.

Keeta's leg - approximate xray cost?
Does anyone know what the approximate cost for a front leg xray is? He's been limping all day and fell when he tried putting weight on it this afternoon. He hurt it at 4:30 this morning. After I checked it, he did put weight on it to move from where he was sitting to go lay down. He ate his breakfas...

Re: Does Your Chow Play With Toys
McKenzie wouldn't touch a toy until just recently. Until we got Keeta, toys were beneath her. Now she mostly tries to see how quickly she can rip them up. She also likes to see how far she can stretch things before they snap (I braid fleece that she does this with, she also does it with toy ropes). ...

Re: Some advise please
Might sound stupid but will a wire crate fit inside the wood one at least until she gets bigger and her wood chewing has stopped? Might solve her chewing and your space issue. If space is tight now, will things be okay when she's full grown? Also, I now have two chows. My first was terribly abused a...

Does anyone know what allergy testing/shots cost?
Just looking for a round about number so we can start saving because it seems as though we'll be going down that path with Keeta.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Itching for 12 weeks...our struggle...need suggestions
Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm going to try to answer everything all at once but remind me if I forgot to answer something! No bloodwork has been done yet, we'll be doing it in 2 weeks. We've had him for 12 weeks and the rescue that we got him from I don't believe did any. His food from the...

Itching for 12 weeks...our struggle...need suggestions
For those of you who don't follow the other site (which I have been primarily using - this one is blocked via my work computer), on August 29, we adopted a male chow for McKenzie. Since bringing him home, he's been itching like crazy. We've been back and forth to the vet. He's been on a course of st...

Re: Hard Times, Drastic Actions
McKenzie's vet does some volunteer work for local rescues and says that as long as his family has food on their tables, he'll work with anyone to help the animals. That's the sort of vet that everyone needs to be! He offers 0% installment plans for everyone with a bill over $100 I think. As long as ...

Word of mouth really is the best way. I asked numerous people for vet recommendations. The most number of people liked our vet so I brought her there and to my surprise, our vet owns a chow too!

Re: My Puppies : Kiki and Goober
Your chows are beauties. I just wanted to chime in about the entropian. I adopted my girl at 2 and got her the entropian surgery a few weeks later. I noticed that her eyes were running a lot and she kept trying to clean them and paw at them. I took her to the vet again (2 weeks after getting her and...

Re: Louie's 16 week vet appt. So Embarrassing!
Our chow we had while I was growing up really hated hats too. If a male was at the door with a hat on, they were not allowed to get one inch into the house. If they were tall, it was even worse. He would bark so hard that his body would actually jump up and backwards (and he weighed a good 78 lbs be...

Did you see his video? He seems very happy now and from everything I've heard, he's got a good temperment (that was with all adults and dogs though). I saw one video where he was just laying in the person's lap receiving belly rubs while the person was talking about him. Look up billy the chow on yo...

Re: What happened to Michael Vick's dogs?
I really wonder what happened with two particular dogs. I saw them on an animal planet (I think) episode. One was a very timid male (was probably a bait dog) but seemed to bond really well with the trainers but was scared of all the other dogs. They ended up finding a dog (that looked VERY similar t...

Re: Louie's 16 week vet appt. So Embarrassing!
I'm not really up to date on everything on the board anymore, I've been really busy but did the vet have really dark clothes on? McKenzie hates meeting "new" men when they have dark clothes on. Our vet always gets on the floor to play with her first but the second time she met him, he had ...

Re: pretty black male in Miami Dade shelter
Just in case you are looking for a female for him to play with (I think I read that you were going to look at the chow mixes they also had while you were there), there is this lovely girl on craigslist. The post says she needs a home by 4/5 or will go to animal control. Maybe you could inquire while...
