Re: Nipping and biting
Is she biting or chewing of hands and fingers ? If she is big enough, you can gently lift your knee up as she jumps which will push her over off balance and take the fun out of it for her. This works really well and if you do it every time it works quickly, a day or two and she should stop jumping u...

Re: Is it okay not to crate train my Chow?
I don't even need to read your post to answer this. Absolutely! I've never had a dog that was trained to enjoy being in a cage, or crate as mostly lazy dog owners like to call them to make themselves feel better. As you might pick up on by my tone, I don't like them. They do have there place in the ...

Re: Is this a Chow?!
I don't think the adoption people know what they are talking about. I don't think that the puppy has either breed in it. Chows and Husky's both have ears that stand naturally and neither of them have a curly coat. I wouldn't worry about any Chow traits. It is a very cute puppy though, and I'm sure i...

Re: Adopting my first Chow
Hi, I'm always happy to give my opinion/advise to anyone that has an interest in learning about Chows before and after getting one. I got my first one in 1980 and have had them ever since so I feel that I know enough about them to give advise. I usually do discourage the average person from getting ...

Re: Adopting my first Chow
Hi again, I'm not use to getting many responses on this site. I have an analogy in regards to their intelligence. The Red Coats trained there soldiers to march straight into enemy fire knowing they would be killed. This made them easy to train, NOT smart. The smart ones were the ones up on the hill ...

Re: Adopting my first Chow
Firstly welcome and I hope you enjoy your new Chow when you get it. I've had many Chows and they were all good with other animals, even cats. I don't see that being a problem any more than any other breed. Be careful with dog trainers. Many of them won't listen to you in regards to your Chow not bei...

Something seems wrong with that. If my dog was in pain I would take him to the Vet.

Re: Leashing Pulling Problem
Another method is one I have used with great success. It might sound mean at first but it isn't, and if done with a lightweight soft lead it doesn't hurt them at all, it just startles them. Get a longer lead, one that you can leave about 3 feet extra hanging. while you are walking just gently swing ...

I simply raised my dogs food and water bowls up off the ground to where he doesn't lean down to eat or drink, problem solved.

Re: Skin problem related to diet?
Hi, I know it's been a while and I hope your dog is well by now. Quite a few years ago we had quite a few bad skin problems with one of our Chows. After a couple of thousand dollars worth of Vet visits and a couple of years battling it we finally got it sorted purely with diet. We tried almost every...

Hi, She is very cute and most likely pure Chow. A spotted tongue and pink gums is probably just due to slightly random breeding and sometimes will darken a bit with age but not always. It would be considered a major fault in the show ring but who cares, she looks like a great dog, enjoy her.

I just saw this post, I can't believe that people aren't responding to questions on here. I haven't been on here for a few years now and I 've decided to come back and have a look. Yes, your Chow is certainly a pure Chow, and very nice looking as well. Can't really see the ears but they will probabl...

Re: 7month chowling won’t sleep indoors
Hi, Firstly, a Chow is as good of a cold weather dog as any other breed and better than most. They are from China, a very cold place. My first Chow would lay out in a snow storm only to get fully covered with snow to where you couldn't see him and he was a black one. Secondly, It is very normal or c...

Re: Is my chow chow pure bred? And will she be big and fluffy?
Hi, I would say that your cute little girl is a pure Chow. The typical Chow that people imagine is probably the "show" type that are very carefully and selectively bred to have a very particular look, or breed standard. There are two coats recognized, the standard long hair (the most commo...

Re: best top 5 dog crates
If you are in situation where you need to crate your dog then you should reconsider even getting a dog. I've had many dogs in my 50 something years and never have any of them been crated or needed to be crated. If it "needs" crated, it's either the wrong breed for the situation or you are ...

Re: Separation Anxiety
Imagine how freaked out this poor dog would be locked up in a crate when you leave. A crate won't help your dogs mental well being it will just stop the damage but your dog will still be very upset with no outlet, don't use a crate. Fix the problem don't just cover it up, that's like turning your ra...

Re: Digging question
Hi ski, I've only had one Chow that dug a little bit when young but that was only when it was very hot and he just removed the top soil to get a cool spot to lay. He grew out of that at about 6 or 7 months old. My dogs have always had their own Sandbox to lay in to stay cool. And no, I don't have an...

Re: Should I get chow chow?
Saying " maybe" is not twisting anyones words. Stating a fact about about getting NO support from the parents (as you did)based on the fact that they don't want a dog inside is. They obviously don' t mind that the family get a dog. I'll let you have the last word if you feel like arguing a...

We went to a very highly regarded eye specialist with our Brisco when he was 6 months old and he said that he needed the surgery. We didn't think his eyes were normal but not really that bad either. We told the Vet that we were going on a 2 week vacation and would have to wait to get the operation u...

Re: Should I get chow chow?
I agree Stella1, Ideally it would be nice and probably better all around if your dog was allowed to come inside at times. My only point was that there are good dogs with loving parents that don't allow them in. And if someone really wants a dog that has to stay out then that is O.K. My dogs do come ...

Re: Should I get chow chow?
I just wanted to say to Constantina, that just because No9's parents say that they don't want a dog in the house doesn't mean that they wouldn't be there to love the dog and help with it in any way. Stating things as facts like he/she will be all alone in caring for the dog is something that was not...
