Berkley Update

Berkley's been here in New Mexico for 8 weeks today. He's come into his new family so smoothly that you'd think he'd been here forever. He is absolutely wonderful! His eyes have recovered from the entropion surgery pretty well and while he has allergies (like hayfever), he's really put on the pounds...

Re: Help with Tod!!! Snake bite

Phyllis...Here in new Mexico, a lot like where you are in Texas, our vets have a snakebite vaccine. The dogs get two shots...both costing a total of $36 here in my neighborhood. the second shot is a booster. I actually did a news story on this last summer to let people know that there's a vaccine fo...

Re: Rescue Chows vs Breeder Chows

This was exactly my point...for which I've been blasted many times. I occasionally think it's stupidity, arrogance or ignorance of what the shelter dogs face. sometimes, I think it's a combination of all three and more.

Re: Rescue Chows vs Breeder Chows

Melanie...the difference between you and some "others" on the group" are glaring. You did your research, you did all the right things with certifications, etc. That's a smart and savvy buyer who really just wants to get a healthy pup from a breeder. But if you read this stuff about th...

Re: Rescue Chows vs Breeder Chows

To both Jeff and Red Dragon....Amen. Jeff, you and I know how hard it was to get Berkley out of that shelter. I've done it for a long time with other breeds, but anyone new to pulling shelter dogs will turn militant about shelter dogs in a heartbeat. It doesn't take much to turn your heart around an...

Re: New Chowlings .... 4 days old

Let's just all agree to disagree. Shannlee 379 has made it clear she will buy a pup from this breeder, no matter what anybody else more experienced with this "breeder" says. A few months from now, even a year or two from now, when Shelby, and surely the new pup to follow, begin to exhibit ...

Re: Rescue Chows vs Breeder Chows

For the most part, health checks are a precursory vet check...no, the pup does not have parvo; no, the pup isn't crippled yet; no, the pup doesn't LOOK like it has entropion; no, the pup LOOKS healthy, well-fed, and happy; no, the pup doesn't have bordatella (kennel cough); no, the pup is still movi...

Re: Rescue Chows vs Breeder Chows

I apologize for injecting myself into this discussion once again. I also apologize in advance to anyone who I may offend. Here's what happens with shelter dogs. Not necessarily rescues, because those generally go right into foster homes where they are safe, at least for a while. I'm talking about &q...

ANNIE HAS A HOME!

I'm cross-posting this from "Chows Who Need A Home" To All, We all work SO hard to get these guys into homes with humans that will love and keep them forever. Annie will now have Kathryn's family! I don't want to pre-empt Kathryn here, but in case she doesn't have time to post, I just got ...

You don't know what a hysterectomy is?
It's spaying for humans. Of the female variety.

Re: New Chowlings .... 4 days old

I guess working with rescues all the time gets one a bit pissed off. There are so many of us on the group who work so hard to find homes for the throw-aways. Then, when I read a post like this, about a breeder who has even MORE Chows (figure at least 25% will end up in shelters later on) I just get ...

Re: New Chowlings .... 4 days old

Ah. Back to the shelter. Nice. Does anybody ever think about WORKING WITH/REHABBING a new dog and integrating it into a new household before throwing it away? I understand the bite stuff and that's horrible. However, being too soft with a Chow, or ANY dog coming into a new household for that matter,...

Re: Shelby & Missy Update...

Intact females, just like intact males, will fight. Period. And, they all need a few weeks for those hormones to ebb away. Think of how wonderful it was to have your hysterectorny. You probably just lost all fight with your husband! And, a lot else, too.

Of course. What happened to Missy? She was returned to the pound? Or was there a Chow person who took her?

Re: New Chowlings .... 4 days old

Red Dragon...I have all rescues. What is "non-compliance"? I'm serious....not giving you the business, I just wanted to know. $950? A rescue will cost a lot less than that.

Berkley says "hi" to his Miss Pekoe (and Connor) and hopes she feels better soon.
Maybe she did fall or slip in the tub, Jeff...hopefully it will work itself out without worrying you to death...

Re: What temperature can your Chow stand??

Our temps are like Nuke's in AZ. Hot, but very dry and often windy. I know a lot of you might not agree with this, but I'd get Wally shaved with a lion cut every June. By the time it started to get cold (because we're at 7200 feet), his coat would have grown out and he'd be beautiful again. With his...

Re: ANNIE IS STILL ALIVE!!

She is still in the kill-shelter in Lamar, CO. Sammie told me last week she planned on taking her, but had to rescue Ruby first. I told her not to worry, since Annie had a few more days, but that was LAST Friday! I would imagine Annie only has until the end of this week. She already escaped euthanas...

Sammie...if you're out there, I really need to hear from you right away. Annie doesn't have much time and it's not going to be easy to get her to ABQ from Lamar CO. If you've changed your mind because you've rescued Ruby, you need to let all of us know as soon as possible so we can still get Annie o...
