Re: Now that Berkley is gone...
That's the problem. If I get really lucky with Randy, I might be able to get ONE more. I couldn't take both.

Re: Now that Berkley is gone...
Thank you for that, Laura. I hadn't thought about it that way. I haven't talked seriously with Randy about getting another Chow...well, maybe just brought it up briefly, but he wasn't happy. He always thought having 5 dogs was too much, but I think he let me get Berks because he knew how much I hurt...

Re: Now that Berkley is gone...
Jeff...check out the two Chows I just posted under "Chows Needing a Home". They're right up the road from me in Santa Fe (50 miles and they're FREE), but the lady wants to keep them together since they're 6 year old litter mates. I'm also seriously looking at a 5 month old blue pup in Colo...

Now that Berkley is gone...
...is it too soon to think about getting another Chow? I know Berks has only been gone a little more than a week, but it seems so empty here now and I miss him so much. Grief is such a weird thing. I was just wondering if any of you had any advice on what YOU did when you lost your Chow... Laura Mac

Re: my pride and joy
Janet...I always find it amazing that, no matter how looney a dog is (either snappy, grouchy or too rambunctious), they instinctively know and are so soft and gentle when they sense frailty in a human, particularly kids. With horses, I've seen the meanest stallion put his nose down so that a handica...

Re: In Memory of Onyx, Bear, and Berkley
Carolyn,
Thank you so much for this beautiful work. Chows are so amazingly photogenic and this trio of Chow babies proves that. From the bottom of my heart, thank you...what a wonderful parting gift for Mr. Berks.

Re: Berkley is Dead
In my effort to make sense of all this, I've been researching these chest cavity tumors. From what I've found, they're called mediastinal tumors and are very uncommon in dogs. I must wonder what happened to Berks along the line and what atmosphere he must have lived in to cause such a thing when he ...

Re: Berkley is Dead
I forgot to mention that I called the Albuquerque Pet Memorial Cremtorium first thing this morning. I used them when Wally died, too. The vet offered to do a necropsy on Berkley at no charge, but I just couldn't put him through anything else. And besides, what would be the point? I didn't want him m...

Re: Berkley is Dead
There have been so many losses in such a short period of time lately that one just has to wonder what is happening. I spoke with my buddy from the Southwest Collie Rescue this afternoon about Berkley and she said this has been the most horrible week. She told me that 4 dogs have died this week, incl...

Re: Bear update
There is something so unique and haunting about ALL the canine Katrina survivors. That's why it's so sad, that after making it through all that to you, Bear's life was taken in such an ugly way. I am so sorry for your loss. I'd been following his story since all of this began and I feel so horrible ...

Re: Berkley is Dead
Jeff, When Onyx died a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't write to you. I just couldn't. I didn't know what to say or do and I felt paralyzed by how painful it was to lose her. I know that feeling well. I lost Wally. I was SO shocked by that horrible turn of events with her that I was just speechless. ...

Janet...keeping all fingers and toes crossed for you to be ok. Also, sending white light to surround and protect you. I hope everything works out fine....we're all behind you.

Berkley is Dead
I cannot believe this has happened. I'm still in shock and denial. It just happened at 3:30 this afternoon. My little Berkley-Bear is dead. Ever since he arrived here, he's been a very slow mover. I thought it was the altitude, but he never acclimated. He also kept gagging. I thought he might have h...

Re: transport for keisha to new home
Quick note...her official name is Keshia...Keh-sheea, not Keisha (Keesha). Just thought you'd want to know that's the name her previous owner gave her before surrending her to the Flower Mound TX shelter.

Layla is right. It takes several weeks for their tongues to change color to purple. Newborn Chow pups have pink tongues.

Re: I am heart broken
Berkley had entropian in both eyes, too. He had the surgery a couple of weeks after he arrived (look up his pics I posted to the Group) and he healed very quickly. His eyes look great now! Nothing to be worried about...Shelby will be just fine. It's good that you can have the eye surgery and the spa...

Re: help
You might try this...it has always worked for me: When you're playing and he gets all riled up, on the very first bite, yelp immediately then turn away with your arms folded. All play IMMEDIATELY stops. Wait for about 30 seconds, then resume play WITH A TOY! Again, as soon as he goes for a bite at Y...

Re: Transport-Dallas to PA help please
Wow...if Linda is going to take her (she didn't want to before because Keshia wa "too old" at age 6), that's the best we can hope for! At least she'll be out of the shelter, since she had virtually no time left, and Linda is very picky about who gets her rescued Chows. This is really GREAT...

Re: Transport-Dallas to PA help please
The hot temps right now may make air transport difficult, but I'll check to see how much it will cost to fly Keshia on Continental. I'm also looking into vehicle transport with a couple of very reputable outfits. It's a VERY long trip from Dallas to Harrisburg where Michelle is (about 1400 miles), b...

Re: The sweetest little girl and the biggest momma's boy ever
Kathryn, Annie's rescue story is a lot like Berkley's. All is well with BOTH of them. I've been watching your posts and hoping that, as she settles in, things would calm down. Sounds like, thankfully, they have. She's such a wonderful little girl and I think there is a reason why she's with you afte...

Re: Berkley Update-more pics
Auddymay, Berkley was neutered two days before Jeff put him on the plane from L.A. to Albuquerque. Then, the poor boy, had to make the 8 hour flight. That's why Jeff and I were so worried about him. He was 20 lbs. underweight, still had all those puncture wounds from the intact pit bull they put in ...

Transport-Dallas to PA help please
Can anybody help with transport, shuttle or otherwise, for Keshia in Dallas to Michelle in PA? she's willing to foster Keshia until we can find her a permanent home. Please help if you can. Even gas money would help.
