Re: The most common traits of Chows?
Someone said regal and I have to agree. Scarlet is very regal and looks with disdain when one of the other dogs do something goofy or heaven forbid pass gas. She even looked regal the 1st day I saw her calmly walking down that busy expressway. When I stopped the car to get out and call her, she stop...

Re: The most common traits of Chows?
Scarlet is indeed aloof with people she doesn't know. She is a one person dog and very protective of me. I had to laugh when I read how a couple people posted about how stubborn they are. The only time I can get her to sit is when I have a treat in my hand and even then she has to evaluate the treat...

The most common traits of Chows?
All dogs are individuals but what would you say are the most common traits of Chows as a breed? Scarlet is my 1st Chow, before I found her I don't even think I had even seen a Chow. She is an absolute delight but is very different than the other dogs in my pack which is made up of mostly Greyhounds ...

She is beautiful! Did you say you are in Houston? I am in Houston as well and would be more than happy to help you any way I can. I have alot of experience with rescue and handling of sometimes challenging dogs. My Scarlet is one of my rescues. I still can't believe my luck finding her strolling dow...

Scarlet keeps trying to eat the rats!
Let me start off by saying I feed her twice a day so she is not hungry by any means. I think when she lived on the streets she ate anything she could find; trash, birds, and rodents. I know she has a high prey drive but she is very focused on trying to eat my rats, (yes, I also rescue rats). I have ...

I know if it was me that found that little cutie, I would consider him a gift and make room for him on my bed. How could you resist that face?

Re: Need advice on dry skin/coat issues
I feed her 1 cup of Evo beef formula, it is grain free. I then mix in a can of Merricks which is a very good quality food. I also mix in D-Zyme powder by Solid Gold, it is a digestive enzyme. She eats twice a day.. She has been eating this for @ least 1 1/2 years. Where can I buy the Apricot Sulfur ...

Need advice on dry skin/coat issues
Does anyone use a special type of supplement in your dogs food to help with dry flakey skin. Scarlets coat is very dry, so is her skin. She gets hot spots and is very itchy at times. Can anyone offer any tips on what has worked for them?

Re: Chow question
No doubt about it, either go to a shelter or a Chow rescue. We have a section here all about chows that are needing homes. I personally believe there are too many animals being killed every day because there are not enough homes. All of my animals have been rescued, current count of dogs; 3 greyhoun...

Re: Some Advice
I have had 4 rescued greyhounds, Jeff is right. Osteosarcoma is one of the leading causes of deaths in greyhounds, (3 out of my 4 have/ or had it) and bloat. My understanding that it happens more often with dogs that are "barrel chested", too much food at once, or letting them engage in st...

I loved that video! Scarlet and my chow/GS mix will have "zoomies" all over the house and yard. I have learned its very helpful to know how to jump out of the way.

I have tears in my eyes reading your post. I think any of us who have lost one of our beloved dogs, know the intense pain and numbing grief that occurs in the days, weeks, and even months that folow. Godspeed Oso you will be missed very much. Keep watch over your Mami until you two can be rejoined.

OMG, Scarlet!
Scarlet has been with me almost 2 years now and I never noticed until just now that she .....SNORES! I mean really loudly, the walls are starting to shake. I can't beieve I never heard her before or maybe I just assumed it was one of my older guys. She cracks me up, she is such a delicate little pri...

My chow is crazy.
I found Scarlet calmly walking down one of the busiest expressways here in Houston. Cars were flying by her going 65mph and even though I had been "warned" about Chows, I knew I could not leave her on that expressway. She was skin and bones and the only thing the vet could tell me for sure...

Re: Hair, there and everywhere!!
Scarlet sheds enough to make a whole new chow. As she walks you can almost see the fur fall. I have tried different brushes but will try an undercoat brush mentioned by clockman. Hopefully that will make a difference.
Re: Wet grass
I just found this topic, I had been thinking my Scarlet was Being "delicate" because she too wil not walk in wet grass, let alone pee. Good to know we are not alone, lol

Re: Chow Tricks?
Scarlet is supposed to sit before she gets a treat. All of the other dogs (none of them are chows) do it without hesitation but Scarlet (my only chow) will look at me intently for a minute or two (as if she is trying to decide if its worth her time and diginty to humor me) and then with a sigh will ...

Re: So, Chow lovers, what other breed(s) would you/do you have?
I love this thread! Well I'm known as the "crazy dog lady" at work if that tells you anything. I do a lot of rescue work so I don't really get to choose a certain breed but I have a huge soft spot for seniors and dogs with special needs. I see beauty in those little gray muzzles and the cl...

Why do Chows have such a bad rep?
It seems as if every time I hear anything about a Chow its always how unpredictible they are, mean, cannot get along with other dogs, hate strangers and will attack, etc. I have had my girl for 1 1/2 years now and know absolutely nothing about her background, (she was a stray when i found her) but s...

I have never seen a cream color chow, not even a picture of one. Does anyone on the board have one? I'd love to see a picture if possible. They must be very beautiful judging by the replies.
