Re: Squat or leg lift?
I always thought it had to do with hormones. Teddy was about 5 when he came to me and he lifted his leg at that time. However, he had been neutered that day and about 2 weeks later stopped lifting his leg. He hasn't lifted a leg for years now, but he doesn't squat either he just leans forward slight...

Re: Dillon's First Day
Auddy, Dillon is beautiful! He is Teddy's size, a big boy! And I remember Lily as a tiny girl. I am out of touch and don't know Montana at all. Are you fostering, fostering to adopt, or adopting? Maybe it doesn't even matter; Teddy was my first attempt to foster and he is here for life. Anyway, beau...

I have had four females ranging from 40-70lbs at a healthy adult weight. My boy is 75lbs at his healthy weight but he is a big chow!

Re: Rennie/ My Wonderful Boy
Victory is correct. I currently have two chows and have had 5 in total. My newest girl is still shy with strangers but has learned that the barking and growling ends with her being shut up alone and ignored. Now she just makes herself scarce at first. Although offering reassurance is a natural react...

Re: Adopting a rescue
Here's a link to a free booklet that starts with thinking you might want to adopt a dog and goes through choosing the type of dog, the shelter/rescue, meeting the dog, bringing the dog home, training and socialization. I skimmed it and it is pretty good -- talks about matching the dog to your lifest...

Congratulations Judy!
Definitely some chowling envy here. They are adorable and should be great playmates for each other. Give all three girls a hug from me please.

Re: Vickie's beloved Kyra has crossed the Rainbow Bridge
Vicki, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. There is no greater act of love than to ease the journey to the other side. And nothing we do for our furkids is more difficult. God bless you for giving your Kyra that gift. She was so loved and she knows it. What a lucky chowling to find her forever home ...

Re: Halti's - Give me Strength!
I use the gentle leader harness for chows that pull. It works very well and they can't get it off. The large has fit both a 51lb chow and a 75 lb chow. Teddy is now about 80lbs and it does not fit him any more. He has a fabric martingale collar that I do have to tighten after I put it on or he does ...

Re: "Aggressiveness" and training
I there is confusion as to aggressiveness and assertiveness just as there often is when describing people. There is a continuum of behavior from submissive through assertive to aggressive. At one far end of the spectrum, a completely submissive individual has so much concern for gaining the approval...

Mia, I feel for you. My Cinder tore off a large piece of rawhide and tried to swallow it. There she was, obviously in distress. I did the only thing I could think of: the Heimlich manuver on her and out it shot. It was terrifying. I am so glad Chutters is okay. Please give him a big hug from Auntie ...

Re: Does your Chow heel?

Cinder walked beside me, but we went through beginning and intermediate obedience classes together and she got her CGC (Canine Good Citizen). When we started obedience classes she pulled. ...

Re: Newbie Here
Welcome! Lots and lots of pictures, please. Then, NILF is a necessity with our chows. They are smart enough to manipulate us into doing what they want, so we have to be vigilant in teaching them we are in charge. If you let this slack a chow will try to move up the ladder, sometimes subtly, other ti...

Those girls are really shining under your care. They look healthy, happy, and at home. I love the sight of them playing with the huskies. What a funhouse (in all senses of the word) you must live in now! You have done a wonderful thing here, and you've only just begun.

Thanks to everyone for your sympathies, blessings and concerns. It really does help to hear from those who understand. I don't think it relates to coloring. My Teddy is a shaded red and weighed in at 89lbs last week. (Of course, the vet said that is about 9 lbs too many. Poor Teddy is dieting, now).

Re: Cinder has moved on
Thanks to everyone. It so helps to talk to those who understand the bond between a chow and their human. I never felt I owned any of my chows, rather I was their companion and they were kind enough to indulge me. I have now lost three, all black chow girls, all in the last six years and yet I feel c...

Cinder has moved on
Last night I had to do the hardest thing we do in our caring for these furkids. I had to ease Cinder's transition from this world to the next. Cinder was diagnosed with an inoperable stomach tumor 7 weeks ago. I had been making and pureeing nutrient dense food, and feeding her small frequent meals a...

Re: throwing up in the car
When my Tasha was a pup she vomit within a minute of being in the car. It was horrible. Finally, we decided she was just afraid of the car. So we set about making the car a source of good things. On day one she and I got in the car sitting on the back seat and I gave her freshly cooked bacon. She to...
