3 year old Chow bit my mom.
Hi all. I haven't been here for quite a while. 3 weeks ago, my family adopted a 3 year old Chow named Barca (neutered male). Before the adoption, I had my 5 year old Chow, Roscoe (not neutered) meet him to see if they get along. Roscoe grew up with me so I trust him with strangers, kids and other do...

Re: More Fur please!!!
Thanks Rio. He had chronic demodecosis and had open wounds on this back and face. They wouldn't dry out with medicine since the fur was too dense. I had no choice but to shave him. It was very traumatic for the poor fella. By that evening, he had a fever and was shivering. I had to wrap him up in a ...

Re: Is he a small ChowChow ?
Hi. Since we're in the same country.. As far as i know, locally bred chows are a little smaller than euro or american chows. Roscoe's 2 yrs old now. He has American Jerves line) 20in high(at the shoulder) 20 in long (point of shoulder to point of hip) and his girth is 24in and 45lbs. He's on the thi...

More Fur please!!!
Hi. I have a 2 year old Chow. Due to medical reasons, I had to shave him to the skin. He's got 3 months of fur growth now. I was wondering if you know of any supplements or tips that I can help his fur grow fuller? Most of the growth is the undercoat. I don't know how to encourage the "ruff&quo...

Re: Where's the "CHOW" in him?
Thanks Victory!!! You always find time to answer my questions. To answer yours, the chow that bit him was a male, 2 years older than Roscoe was. They were playing and sniffing each other for about 20 minutes before he snapped and bit Roscoe. I didn't react because I didn't think that he was hurt. Ju...

Thanks Fozzbear. I was just worried that he'll be hurt by other dogs.
I guess I have no problem.

Re: Where's the "CHOW" in him?
You got me wrong. I don't want him to be aggressive and bark all the time.
I just want him to be able to defend himself when needed.
He loves being with other dogs and to play. It just breaks my heart when he gets bullied. When he gets growled at, he'll sit on his own and watch other dogs play.

Where's the "CHOW" in him?
I have a 2 year old Chow called Roscoe. What's unusual about is that he doesn't behave like a Chow. His manners and temperament are more like a retriever (though he doesn't retrieve). He's Chow enough that he sleeps most of the day and doesn't come when you call, but the growling, biting aggressive ...

Hi. With my experience, Roscoe's coat filled out like a "bolero" jacket (till just behind the front legs), then the rest followed.

Re: Wanting whats best for my new Chow.
Hi Jayr, I live in Manila and my Roscoe is now turning 2. As a pup, I fed him Orijen for large breed puppy. As for the biting, you have to be stern with them. Roscoe stopped biting "for real" before he was 1 year. When he snapped, I would tell him "no bite", put him on his back a...

GOSH! Nero looks like my Roscoe!
Roscoe just had a bigger, diamond shaped mask. He grew up to be cinnamon.
Congratulations! I guarantee that you''ll have a good chuckle with their antics everyday! Enjoy it! They grow up really fast.

Re: ROSCOE - A year in the making
He is a lovely boy. At 14 months though, I'd say he hasn't reached his full adult weight, he might even add 1/2 inch or so to his height. They aren't quite done until 2.5 to 3 years...He could easily top out at 55 or so lbs bringing him into the smaller size for male chows but still within norms. T...

Re: ROSCOE - A year in the making
OMG he is perfect. And he looks so healthy and athletic! Is he? Athletic? He looks like Loo does, like he could run forever! Actually, I think he puts it on. He basically sleeps most of the day except for this moment in the afternoon that he gets a burst of energy and runs around like crazy. Then, ...

Exactly! Doesn't it feel great when you're able to convert someone?chica_2626 wrote:He is beautiful! Glad to hear he is acting as an ambassador for the breed. My goal with J.D. is to change each person's mind one at a time, because I know plenty of people that don't truly believe chows can be nice.

Re: ROSCOE - A year in the making
He's now a year and 2 months and has grown to be a very kind and gentle boy. 18 1/2 in at the shoulders and 45 lbs. His demodecosis is slowly subsiding after a year of treatment. When the Vet sees him, she tells everyone in waiting room that "He's the only Chow that you can hug." Which mak...

I put golf balls in the bowl when my chow did that and seemed to do the trick. There are also "slow feeder" bowls available in the market which might help.

Re: excessive saliva of chow chow/chin and legs always wet
Hi! My roscoe (yearling) drinks from a bottle with a spout i got from the pet shop. its got a metal ball in the end. it keeps him quite dry. if he drinks from a bowl, he''ll spread the water on the floor with his paws and lays on it. Besides, the bottle stops him from drinking too much too quickly.
