Re: Our Chowgirl Shelly
She did watch over me. Actually I imagined she was running alongside me. I had a great race, bettering my March Oakland marathon time of 4:17 my 19 minutes to 3:58. But more importantly I had lots of comments and good discussions regarding Shelly's picture and our life together before, during and af...

Re: Our Chowgirl Shelly
Yesterday we reached the very difficult decision to arrange for Shelly's passage over the rainbow bridge. She was very disoriented and no longer able to raise her hips or move on her own. We truly felt any prolongation would be selfish on our part. This morning our vet, a wonderful caring soul, came...

Re: Our Chowgirl Shelly
This past month we have seen a slow steady decline in Shelly. She's become less and less mobile, to the point we need to help her get to her pee-spot in the back yard. She's eaten no more than a total of a few ounces of any kind of food in the past week and her weight has dropped drastically. Althou...

Personally I'd go with the advice of my vet over a breeder, but that's just me.
Your inside dog probably wont spend ALL it's time inside.

Just an updated picture of Shelly.
We got her hair cut a bit shorter than usual a couple of weekends ago due to some Klingon issues, dingleberries my wife calls them.

Re: Our Chowgirl Shelly
Thank you so much for all the well-whishes. Our chowgirl Shelly is not 100% but is doing sooooo much better!!! \:D/ \:D/ =D= =D= It is as the vet thought and we are so relieved. Her appetite is almost where it was, she is a little slow on the stairs and walks but that's just fine! She's lost a bit o...

Re: Our Chowgirl Shelly
Thank you for your insight Fozzbear. I spent a lot of time last night just lying on the floor near her and petting her. She seems to be fine and not in any distress as long as she's lying near us. My wife says she got up this morning on her own to drink and potty. Then back to lying down. This is al...

Re: Weird breathing !! Does your chow do this?
I've never had a cat with a hairball, but when our chow is about to throw up she starts a rythmic heaving.
Not sure if that's similar to what yours is doing, but ours usually follows it with a small amount of throw up.

Re: Our Chowgirl Shelly
We visited the vet yesterday and got much better news than expected. He thinks Shelly has Idiopathic or “Old Dog” Vestibular Disease. To quote the second link: Dogs with idiopathic vestibular disease have some combination of the following symptoms: •A head tilt •They are unsteady on their feet and m...

A benefit of the surgery that removed half her lower jaw is that we get to see more of her beautiful purple tongue!

Our Chowgirl Shelly
The past year has not been easy for our Chowgirl Shelly. She's about 13 years old. I say "about" as we got her as a rescue chow in front of a local pet food store. I also say we won the lottery with her as she is the sweetest dog I've ever had. About a year ago she was having small acciden...

Re: New owner of old Chow Chow
Such stories make me ashamed to be a male of our species. When we got our chowpup Shelly many years ago we were told she had been abused and did not like men. I gave her space but she didn't seem to mind that I fed and walked her. I was soon her favorite and still am. She is also the sweetest dog I ...

Dry Lightning
It's been a long night. I'd heard something about dry lilghtning on the radio but didn't think anything of it. Then around 1AM our Chow-Diva Shelly woke us up all whiney and flustered. I just couldn't calm her down and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then between 2-3AM I saw the flash and figure...

Re: Pay Groomer from hell who refused payment?
That "groomer" needs to find another profession. One that doesn't involve dogs OR people! We take Shelly to TLC Pet Grooming in Clayton, but that's probably a bit far for you. They were recommended by her foster mother when we adopted her and we've never taken her anywhere else. For regula...

Re: UGGGHHH!!!!
Amazing! What did the kid EXPECT to happen when he pulled that tail? What did the "parents" expect? Did they want the kid to get bit so they could sue you? That's about the only thing that makes sense. You handled the situation perfectly. An intelligence test for having kids? The closest t...

Re: Chows and Feet!!
When I get home from work, Shelly greets me at the door and as I sit down on the stairs to take off my shoes she will sit her butt on top of them, usually facing to the right or left. I think she does it because she wants me to stop taking off my shoes and pet her some more. Silly doggie!

It's actually gotten quite a bit better, but I'm giving her another bath tonight.
It should be interesting as I usually don't wash her "face".

Bathtime then Skunktime!
Last Saturday while our son was taking the PSAT, I took Shelly to the local PetSmart for a do-it-yourself bath (I love those facilities!). We went to dinner that night and when we got home she was a bit more excited than usual when she greeted us in the garage (we have a pet door and a fenced off sp...

She probably thought they were free samples...like at Costco!
As long as you bought food, I don't think the employees thought any less of you.
Now, if you had bought nothing and said "Just looking!" on your way out...
