Re: Not social
Have you taken him to any puppy training classes? I would start socializing him there, where he can be around other puppies (and people) in a controlled environment.

Re: Backyard Advise
I can't say for all Chows, but Dim Sum liked to dig when he was a puppy, but grew out of it. Now he only does the scratching of the ground after eliminating. He doesn't have a digging box, but at my sister's house, there is a raised planter that he uses a bit like a crate/kennel; he jumps in and lay...

How could you have failed your doggy if the breeder did not provide a healthy puppy in the first place? She would have problems regardless is she was with you are someone else. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. I hope everything works out.

Our family's first Chow was named Char Siu (BBQ pork). Then came Siu Mai (pork dumpling). If and when I get another...I would love to get a cream sister for Dim Sum...her name would be Yum Cha; literally "drink tea," the Cantonese name for a morning/lunch tea meal. Dim Sum is what you eat ...

Re: Should I trim his coat?
I've looked for bibs when I had Siu Mai, but I could never find anything that would fit without having to modify it in some way. I used to use doggy bandanas, but I don't anymore. On long walks, I carry a towel.

Re: YUCK: Dim Sum's Worst Behavior
What irks me besides the behavior is that in this case, the poop was left by another dog in the neighborhood. I absolutely HATE when other owners do not clean up after their own dog! Even when I walk Dim Sum at the neighborhood of my other house, where there are poop clean-up bag stations, people le...

He is gorgeous. How much time do you spend grooming him? How much does he weight? Like a lot of us our dogs, they are ambassadors for the chow breed and we must show everyone they are great dogs. Thank you for the compliment! Dim Sum is about 73 lbs. I usually groom him once a week; twice if he is ...

JMHO, I do not think invisible fences are a good idea at all. Put up a real fence, or do not leave your dog in the yard to roam free.

YUCK: Dim Sum's Worst Behavior
I took Dim Sum for his morning walk. He was sniffing the ground, I wasn't paying attention, and did not see the poop until he decided to roll it in. YUCK. He doesn't do it too often, thankfully, but still. So gross. That is one advantage to a dog with short fur...much easier to clean up. Not so with...

Re: Now it's my turn, (Sigh!) Picky eater
I always thought chicken/turkey bones were the most dangerous to give and was a complete no no. There is no way Henry will have a chicken bone. COOKED bones are a no-no, because they are brittle and can splinter. But raw is fine; raw bones are relatively soft. That's what a dog would eat in the wild.

What would prevent me from using Comfortis is that it does nothing about ticks, at least that's what I gather from reading the manufacturer's site.

Dim Sum is definitely an Alpha male that chases and occasionally mounts other dogs. But thankfully knows to back off if the other dog displays displeasure with his actions.

FWIW, as far as I know, Larinda quit about two years ago. But I notice the former site's entrance page was put up or at least updated on February 12. None of the other pages are up though.

Do you have any nicknames for your doggy or doggies? I use a raft-full on Dim Sum: Poo-Poo Stinky Stinky Poo-Poo Heavyweight Champ Heavy Duty (pronounced Heavy Doody; a double entendre. He is rugged, but he is also a weighty poo-poo) Fat Paw No longer used: Chicken McNugget (when he was a puppy, his...

The reason why Dim Sum likes to lay on the landing is to guard the house! It allows him to look out the front window, seeing anyone who passes by on the sidewalk, or come up the walkway to the front door.

Walking With Chows
A poll: How often do you walk with your Chow? I usually walk with Dim Sum twice a day, once in the morning, and once in the late evening. How far or how long do you go? Usually it is 20-30 minutes or a half mile or so. He constantly sniffs around, so our overall speed is not swift. :P On weekends we...
