The Extended Standard as applicable to the Breed Standard used in South Africa ...
..."Active means just that. A Chow, like any other dog, should be fit enough to move at a brisk pace and should not amble or lumber when moving. Balance refers to every aspect of the Chow and should not be confused with size. Every part of the Chow must be in proportion to every other part; head neither too big nor too small for the body, legs neither too short nor too long and bone neither too slight nor too heavy. Leonine, presumably, refers to the Chow’s ruff, which is comparable, one might say, to the mane of an adult male lion. The proud and dignified look of a fully alert Chow is unmistakable, and is accentuated by its somewhat 'oriental’ expression. The best Chows are truly well knit, or tight in frame with no slackness in joints or muscles. Only owners can testify to their loyalty, quietness and independence, although many visitors to a Chow home will have experienced this latter quality.
