please read, need advice for Shadow who is balding badly.

Post by helpshadow »

Hi, my name is Jim and I just signed on as a member to hopefully find some helpful information about my chow chow "shadow" who has lost most of her hair and is mainly bald on her back. She has been scratching at herself for a long time even with baths, etc., It looks awful and I don't know where else to turn. If anyone has any helpful advice I would be so grateful.
She's a wonderful black chow who I found in the streets 3 years ago. I hope someone out there knows what to do. Thanks for reading.

Have you taken her to the vet? It could be anything from mange to allergies. It sounds like she could have mites.

I posted a response on your other msg about this too. I agree with Rogansmommy...check for mites! We had an awful experience with it!

Great to hear Shadow is doing better now. If i had seen your post before and knew you were feeding your Chow Iams that would have been my advice, get rid of the Iams.

I've always said never fed your Chows Iams that is some bad stuff, I went through the skin problems, vets, and medications with Pekoe when I first adopted her, got rid of the Iams and never had another problem. I knew it was bad but didn't realize it was that bad to make a Chow go bald.

Shadows problems should be an example for all those people posting that their Chows are having skin problems and how important their diet is and feeding them the proper food.

That Iams commercial that says feed your dog Iams and they will act younger with more energy, the reason is they fell it with corn and wheat fillers, Corn turns to sugar in a dogs systems that's why the energy boost and appearing to act younger. I mentioned this before but Pekoes Vet says giving a dog a cup of Iams is like a human eating 5 chocolate bars, a big sugar rush.

Hi Jim,

I had joint this site and read your posting. My Tiger had -- still has but less severe now, similar problem. I had took him to see the specialist and did whole bunch of tests. He has allergy, especially to certain pollens. He is under year round allergy shots and small dosage of pretnizon. And he is doing much better now. So if you still had not found any solution, hope this information helps.
