Feed question

Post by furballchowbaby »

Hello... I'm new to the board today! I wonder what everyone feeds their Chows?? We had a Chow before (we lost Sally to cancer in Sept. 06) who could not eat certain feed... Science diet made her coat really yucky... Purina brands were hard on her kidneys, etc. We had great luck with a brand called Black Gold, but we are having trouble finding a distributor to return our calls in Ohio. So, we are looking for a good brand for our newest addition, 4 month old Maggie! TIA!

Welcome aboard! :D and thanks for coming! :D

Maggie is a real sweety. Congratulations!

The food question has been discussed in about a thousand or two post here in the last year, so while you are waiting for more replies you might want to look back through the archives. FYI my furkids are both on Nutro Lamb and Rice, partly because Jeff keeps recommending it every couple of days, and Peks seems to be OK.

As a rule, the folks here avoid the supermarket brands, owing to the high sugar content, as well as corn and wheat fillers, that can cause allergic reactions in some chows. I had my Girls on Nature's Recipe, but Pip, my older girl, had a bad reaction. Never did find out if it was just the one bag or the food itself that was disagreeable, because we went to Jeff's favorite, Nutro Lamb and Rice. Less fillers- means less body waste, if you get my meaning.

I go with the nutro ultra since it has the whole grain brown rice instead of white, but there are allot of good brands. Nutro, blue buffalo(with some down sides some have had digestion problems with this one), solid gold, candaide.

ha.. i was just going to start a new post on this one.. but i'll wrote stuff here, since it works...

So.. Gabbana is 11 months and all i have fed her so far was Science diet lamb and rice puppy, she's tried original and she liked it better by the way.. buttttt then I found this site and now switching foods. Gabbana is very picky so i decided to take on an experiment about what brand of food she'll like best(yes I AM a science geek in real life too)!!!

I went out and bought small bags of: Nutro Lamb and Rice large puppy, Eagle Pack lamb and rice lr. breed, Solid Gold Wolf Cub (with bison and duck). I didn't feed Gabbana for about 15 hours, so she'll be hungry (she doesn't eat much to begin with during the time I took her food away, no cruelty here). I took her out of the room and I put 30 kibbles of each type of food on separate napkins and put them right in front of where she would come in when I would let her in. I observed which food she would eat first.
Here are my results: She went for the Nutro first (yay jeff), then she went for eagle pack, and only after some debating she went for solid gold.
Conclusion: as this experiment has many sources of error, I at least know she likes nutro, but eagle pack holistique is human grade (i'm not sure if nutro is), but that makes me happy knowing that I could eat it too (poor student, never know when i may need to eat some hahaha  ), as well as eagle pack makes a fish formula which is hypoallergenic and great for their coat.

Sorry for long post, thought i would share my lameness with all of you!!
best, Olga

Nutro ultra is I am not sure about the one you used I will have to check that one. Also large breed is not really for chows. Chows are medium breed and from what I have heard from kiwani our resident nutrionist it is bad for chows to eat large breed formula.
Personally I say go with nutro cause jeff's arguments are worth it. Mostly though besides jeff I was sold on the gurantee on taste, thicker shiner coat, and less poop. And they lived up to all of the gurnatees. All around Ivana has never looked or acted better than when she is on nutro. I do also supplement and use yougurt and cottage cheese and fresh foods.

Geez, so now Nutro can't be mentioned without me, that makes me the Nutro guy. Nutro better be reading all this. What ever happened to the Vacuum Guy?

redangie, I tried Nutro natural... you're not supposed to feed large breed?? Really.... that's what the vet told me to feed, and I like how they have glucosamine and chondritin in them, and nutro has something in it to prevent growth spurts that are bad, can't remember what the rep at the local pet store was telling me....

I would pm kiwani since I am not sure of the reasoning and there are too many food links for me to search the archives on that particular post.
