Potential Chow owner with young kids

Postby Nicko » Fri Feb 22, 2019 12:12 am

Hi,

I have been planning to get a Chow puppy in the next couple of months. We are a family of 5 with 3 children with ages ranging from 3 to 8. I'm experienced with dogs (Keeshonds). I've done plenty of research about the breed and feel the Chow will fit nicely into our family. However we were talking to a vet nurse and she said we would have to be crazy to get a Chow. She says they are naturally dangerous and would need muzzling round our children. She also said that socialisation will make no difference. I'm pretty sceptical about what she has to say, however the implications if she is actually right are not ideal. A few more facts are that we have plenty of space, the dog will live indoors with us, and I fully intend to socialise and train the dog. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would love to hear them.

Thanks.

I do not believe what she said to be true... I grew up with a Chow in the home. He taught my sister how to walk and never had any behavior issues. I will worn you that they do get very bonded to one person and/or their family. The only time our chow was ever aggressive or mean was if one of us was in danger. He bit my brothers friend in the butt when they got in a fight, did not break skin. He also attached another dog that came onto the property going after one of us. He went every where with us, camping, horse back riding, hunting, hiking. He was never on a leash, but he stayed with us always.
I now have another Chow that is different from the one I grew up with. He is fine at home and with us and my parents. He does not like anyone else. He does not go after any one but does bark and run, then comes back and barks and runs. He seems to be scared of other people. He was socialized from 9 weeks on and still not sure of other people. If new People come over it takes him close to an hour to be ok with them. Then he is fine, he may or may not let them pet him. Very picky on that with new people. I would say do your research on the breeder and how many times the breeder has bred the dog. They can over breed and the puppies start having issues. I should have done more research on my current Chow's Breeder. He either over bred or possible in-bred. He had all his dogs together mother, father and adult son's. I do still love my Chow and am working on ways to correct his behavior.
