I'm a bit late here, I've been very busy. I am saddened to hear about the ban in Denver. It won't work, it hasn't worked in Detriot or Miami, Detriot has a partial ban, only adults can own Pits, Miami has a full ban, I say it hasn't worked because in both these communities the people who own these dogs for fighting have gone underground, and some of them are now using other bigger breeds for fighting like Bull Mastoffs.
Someone said that there are no standards for American Stradforrdshire Terriers, (Pitt Bulls) There are, the dogs still show at most shows and I just recently saw them at the Crups(sp?) dog show in England. But to read the AKC standard go to this link:

I also agree with the person who pointed out that a dog who will not allow a stranger to approach closer than 3 inches will not last long in a shelter, this is a failure for most temperment tests, including the NY City SPCA, I would advise you to watch Animal Precint. (can't spell tonight). They have euthanized many dogs and cats because they wouldn't allow people to touch them.
Enough about all of that though. My real concern is that the city of Denver has decided to ignore the 2nd amendment and invade people's homes to remove their property. This is just another incident of the current US government is chosing to ignore the consitiution. Also, let's not forget that they have targeted the poor first. This is just a stupid bandaid that won't work.
What we need is REAL laws, first anyperson who delibertly allows their dog off leash and attack another dog should be fined heavily, minum of $1000.00, plus be forced to attend some kind of classes on pet owner ship, and do community service at the local spca or animal shelter.
2nd. people found breeding dogs for fighting, should be charged with a felony, sentenced to no less than 5 years in prison, and charged a fine of $10,000. And have their rights to own any animal revoked for life.
3rd for the time being, (5 years at least) all Pit Bulls should only be bred by AKC registered breeders who SHOW their dogs, this will insure even tempered well mannered dogs, (this is what has helped get rid of the overly aggressive chows of the 1950's) This should require a license of $2000.00 per each breeding dog. All none breeding dogs should be neutuered to be licensed.
Doing these three things will cut down on the number of Pits available to people who only want them for some kind of status symbol as well as eventually, ending the whole fighting dog idiocy.
Cities need to be more pro-active with licensing, and people who have pets could help this by reporting animals that don't seem to be licensed or who are allowed to run.
If I had done that I could have saved a dog's life, where I used to live someone let their lab run at night, she was shy and didn't bother anyone, but she wandered the streets, I didn't report her, and one night she got hit by a truck. It severed her back legs and all that could be done at that point is to be euthanized. Since then I report any and all animals I see running free. It's like this, you wouldn't just stand there and watch a 2-3 year old child wander around unsupervised, a dog or cat is the same, they need us to look out for them even if they don't belong to us.
The governments of this country are using the big brush to pretend to fix things, it's good media, but lousy for the future. It's time we stop counting on our government to fix these issues and we start doing it ourselves. We should be telling the legislators what laws to write and pass. But we can only do that if WE make the effort to know what we are talking about. Statments that condmen Pit Bulls are not informed. Statments that paint all chows as sweet hearts that will allow anything, are also not informed.
Okay that's enough for my two cents.

Hello everyone I'm new to the board (and glad I found you). I'm running on both sides of the fence since I own a female chow x and a male pit bull. The entire Denver ban has me up in arms and frustrated. I dont know it you have heard the latest, Aurora, CO is now trying to ban pit bulls 
. I'm w/ a group in CO called BEND Colorado (Breed education not Discrimination) and I'll be speaking at the Aurora city council meeting on Aug 9th *Yikes*. We are supporting mandatory spay/neuter of pit bulls although we would like it to be none breed specific and read mandatory spay/neuter of all pet quality dogs. I teach a responsible pit bull ownership training class at the local animal shelter. Anyway here is a list of city council members in Aurora if you feel compelled to write. All support is greatly appreciated. Oh and look for Mama (aka hussy butt) on the news July 25, she'll be there repping her pit bull buddies.
