Just had entropian eye surgery

Post by Zilla »

Hi everyone, I haven't been on in a while but I just wanted to say that we finally did the eye surgery for my chowchild Kiki. For those of you who dont know me I wrote about my chows in a previous post: http://forum.chowchow.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=14312

We just had it done yesterday and I have to honest I was expecting worse. She looks great! Not at all what I was expecting. She doesn't even look like a basset hound. But she is still very drugged up and she cried all night. We have never had either of our doggies on our furniture but she was so sad that we put her and hr blankey on our bed and she is now sleeping soundly! She has the biggest cone I've ever seen. The Dr. said its the only one that would fit around her neck comfortably but its too long for her and he suggested we cut it down. She can't even walk without hitting it...poor girl.

Question for those of you who had this done: Did your doggies also cry and squeal all night and day after the surgery? Is it b/c they are in pain or just unhappy and uncomfortable with the cone situation?

This is Kiki yesterday morning before the surgery:

aww bless but it was for a good reason, i have a chow we rescued 3 months ago she needs an op although hers is mild i wanted to get her in better physical condition before going ahead, I found all my chows hate hate hate the cone so i used an inflatable collar like a rubber ring, called a comfy collar, worth every penny and last forever it has many uses as it comes in handy if they ever get an outbreak of hot spots as well,Please bear in mind if you have a long backed contortionist it may not help, so go for the soft version of the cone this is usually better accepted than the loud awkward plastic ones, if you cannot find a supplier for the collar in the USA they do ship internationally. Dogs can also find recovery from the anaesthetic a little scary and can cry as they may be in discomfort/pain and the wound may feel like it needs a good relieving rub which we cannot allow, so its frustrating for them so they cry. it will pass.

Petco do a version for you guys in the USA

I hope Kiki is feeling a bit more comfortable today. She looks great considering she has just had eye surgery there doesn't look to be too much swelling. She will soon be back to normal and it will all be a distant memory but you will know hers eyes will be safe from damage now. :D

Yes, I had a Chow girl that had the surgery and she cried the night I brought her home.
It was many years ago but I do remember she cried after any surgery she had. I'm not sure if they gave you pain meds but maybe that would help?
I'm happy she got her surgery, good for you getting it done!
I LOVE the inflateable collar, makes life much easier!
She'll be feeling better soon!

Thanks to everyone for your support and advice. Kiki is doing much better today. We are totally going to order a soft cone. Even if she doesn't get to use it at least we'll have it for Goober when he has his surgery next month. For now we cut her cone yesterday and she can now smell and eat with it on. I elevated her food and water bowls on a step-stool and her cone fits all the way around it as she eats...its super cute and funny. I was worried her brother goober would try to lick her or play with her but her cone scares him and when she walks towards him he runs...my whimpy chow! Thank you all again for your support. It always very emotional to see your chowchild in pain or go thru an operation. But she has been such a trooper. She even had the strength to get all excited about the neighbors cat when I took her out for a quick walk. She still hasn't pooped but I think she might be constipated from the meds.any suggestions on how to un-constipate her?

This is my princess being spoiled on the bed =) I'm working from my bedroom the last two days so I can be close to her...It makes her happy :)

You could try giving her canned food to get her to go the bathroom.
That has happened often to my Chows after surgeries.
I'm sure others have suggestions!
Keep us posted :D

Its been 2 weeks since my Kiki's surgery and the cone is off and she is going great. Her eyes are looking great. No more tears and he little face looks sooo cute with those big beautiful eyes. I'm still monitoring her when she is playing with her brother (over protective mommy) but she is happy and has bounced back :) Thanks everyone for your support.

Hi zilla!

my first chow had entropian surgery at 3months of age.....it was real bad. :( the vet had to do the surgery 2x because she didn't want to cut too much. both times my chow was ok. i didn't even use the cone on her! she never pawed her face, it was amazing. i don't know if she was too young to know or what, but she was totally fine. she acted normal. played and ate....did everything she normally did. i think chows in general have a high tolerance for pain. when my dog was 2yrs old we had to have her tail amputated because someone tried to dognap her and i guess her tail got caught on the car door! ouch!!!!!! after the surgery she wasn't crying or anything....just very quiet. the only time she did cry was when she had to poo :( it was so painful to see :( but a few weeks later she was fine.

Glad to see Kiki weathered the surgery just fine..she looks great. . (some how I missed the original post).
Nikki hated those cones and she let me know it. She rammed the edges into the back of my knees whenever she could. And watching her go up the steps and try to get in the door. OH, boy was that a feat in its self. So glad for soft pillow ones.

I'm so glad Kiki is doing well. Our 1 1/2 year old, Kodi is going in Thursday for neutering and entropian eye surgery on one eye. I am so glad I came on here and learned about the soft collars because we were worried about the hard plastic ones. Kodi is big (70 lbs) and so I am going to Petco tomorrow to get the soft comfy one. Thanks so much everybody for the information.
