Couldn't believe it!!!
For those of you who didn't read my post the other week, I'm waiting until June 6 for my fur baby to be born (hopefully - I'm 4th on the list, but the mummy Chow only had 3 puppies last time... ). It'll be my first Chow, so I've been religiously reading this site every day, but haven't said much yet as I'm still so naiive in the ways of the Chow
So anyway, I was talking with my partner about how we're going to be consistant and train our puppy, and he was eating a ham sandwich and the cats were prowling around being our best friends in the hope for some ham. So he says "right, I'm starting with the cats! I'm going to train them to sit". "Yeah right" says I. "You can't train a cat "
What do you know though, five minutes later I have the best-behaved gentlemen- and lady-like cats you've ever seen. So cute to see them just sitting up straight, tails curled around their paws waiting for a bit of ham! My partner moved from room to room and tried it in each with no problem. Then five minutes after that, when we judged that they may have forgotten, I tried it, and straight away they both sat down! Although the funniest thing is that Richie doesn't say "Sit", it's "Bums on floor"
So thanks Chow Chow org members for your training advice - it certainly improved my cats' dinner manners!
We'll just see if they remember tomorrow.....

Re: Couldn't believe it!!!
Wow that is amazing perhaps I had better start work on my cats. Chows are so like cats in some ways that I am sure you are going to be fab chow parents. I really hope that the bitch produces more than three puppies. All the best and fingers crossed.
Re: Couldn't believe it!!!
Our cat Mokie picked up on "Sit" and "Out of the kitchen!!" from me working with the dogs. Cats CAN be trained, especially with meat as the positive reinforcement. She will now sit on command even without a treat.
Hugs from Dargo and Denny!

LOL! It reminds me of a line from the movie Dodgeball Rip Torn's character is trainind his team by throwing wrenchs at them yelling, "IF you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!" (Not all could dodge the wrenches.) I think it must be the same kind of thing...if you can train a cat, you can train a Chow!
Re: Couldn't believe it!!!
Hey, thanks for the well-wishes guys - I'm not sure I can wait until June to find out about the baby... It's like waiting for Christmas! I was hoping that my experience and connection with cats could be extended to Chows, and your comments make me feel more confident that it can! I know that they're no way the same, but that fact they share similar temperaments certainly was what first attracted me to the breed.
*lol* about the Dodgeball comment Richie's now thinking he can train the cats up like in Meet the Parents I've unconciously trained them (or they've trained me!) for little handsignals like "Come for lap snuggles" (patting my hand on my knee) and they know their names, but I never made the connection that this meant that they could be 'properly' trained somewhat. And yeah, they're now doing it without the treat, but I'm getting the filthiest looks afterwards when it doesn't materialise
And the most amazing thing was they remembered this morning!

Re: Couldn't believe it!!!
Don't tell anyone I said this but in our house, the cat is by far the smartest. He can pick up on words while we are talking. We have to put put the cat in the bathroom when Fozzie and Teddie come inside so someone will say, "Put Nemo away so the dogs can come in" and Nemo will try and hide from us. Nemo knows "come on", "go away", "no", "stop", "feed" (as in feed Nemo or feed the dogs), and I am sure there are others I can't think of right now. The cat is more interested in using the words against us though than following what it is we want. He also tries to talk to us all the time. Before we had the dogs, the cat used to sit in the window and watch the yard and come and get me if anything was out there. The new neighbors came over and asked if we had seen their blind, declawed, three legged cat who had gotten out of their yard. They thought maybe he went under the fence. Without thinking I said, "I don't think he is here because Nemo hasn't said anything." The guy looked at me funny. Sure enough about an hour later Nemo was all over me wanting me to follow him to the back door and there was the cat.
Actually Boogie can pick up on a few words not directed at him too so we have had to modify things that we say. He knows, "Put Boogie out". He throws himself on the floor and becomes dead weight so he doesn't have to go. Instead we have to say, "Go potty Boogie" and he will go out. He also knows the word "look" and he will run to the TV. And all of our pets not only know their own names but they also know each others names and love when someone else is in trouble.

Cat's know what you are saying. My cat Linus knows when go to the vet day is. He just knows. They definitely aren't stupid.
