Colonel turns a deaf ear!

Post by bama »

Around here, Princess Buttercup and Colonel get excited on garbage day, why....
because we allow them,(off lead) to walk down the driveway to put the garbage
bag(s) in the bin and take it to the street.
They get so excited by the site of garbage bags, it's downright pathetic!
Back story: Colonel and PB always go to the street on trash day, deposit the trash and come
right back into the house.
Currently, Colonel has an ear infection and I have laryngitis, he can't hear
and I can't talk. So, I've been relying on hand signals, ok?
Ok, so we are walking down the driveway, en route to the trash bin, when
Colonel spots a cat! OH GEEZ, I can't call him back! I'm standing on the
street clapping, trying to whistle, generally looking like a moron, but quickly...
thinking like a super heroes, Princess Buttercup and I went back to the house, got the car and
honked the horn! Guess who came running up the driveway, ready to jump in and go to Petsmart?
What could I do? I had no prior plans to go to Petsmart, but he was so cute, I had to take him!

***and the ear infection...my bad, I got water in his ears during bath time.
His ears are filled with medication, so he can't hear a thing!!!

Nikki will turn a deaf ear even on a good day (no infection). I sure hope the car thing doesn't wear off cause that is my only alternative ..Nikki took off after a fox and chased it down right to the den.. The fox hissed at her and she backed up alittle (mom protecting her babies) and I came through with the car and honked and she came. But ended up in quarantine (even with up todate rabie shots) just to make sure for 10 days.. silly dog..

Hmm! "A" deaf ear - M & M have 4 deaf ears between them. They never, but never get to go outside with the wheelie bin. However, they do love bin collection day because we live a small cul-de-sac of 14 bungalows and we are at the bottom. When the bin lorry backs down the avenue they rush round to the front and watch the men wheel the bins and hook them onto the back of the lorry to be emptied and then they get quite excited when they wheel them back. Almost without exception the men stop to talk to them and pat them. Fridays mornings are special to Milly and Mabel and tomorrow they will get a treat because every five weeks, the lorry comes to collect the newspapers for recycling. \:D/

Oh poor colonel first you torture him with a bath then you don't let him chase that darn cat!! At least he got a trip to petsmart out of it. I am happy to hear he comes back to the sound of the horn, I will have to remember that one.

I can only assume that Colonel would have come back if I could have called him....hmmm?
When he heard the horn, he had to stop and think...hmmm, a cat or a new toy from Petsmart?
Yes, he got a new toy...a big orange ball with spikes on it!
Smart choice, because, the ball bounces, cats don't!

Judy...we live in an off road kinda place, there is only one other house on my street.
I wasn't worried about him getting on a busy street, I was worried about the cat!!

Tam, I feel really badly about getting the water in his ears. I'm a terrible mummy!

Auddy, fortunately I only have one neighbor who saw me, she just thought I was having a seizure, what's new?

Chowpups, quarantine, huh? Scary times! I should have thought about that with Colonel, because we
have a fox den in our yard.

Vicster has been here, right Vic, your picking up what I'm puttin' down, yo?

David, I knew you would feel my pain!

Ahh, the old "honk the horn, fool 'em into thinking you're leaving' trick! *LOL* Glad it worked!

We actually use that in our recall classes with dogs who really don't want to listen to their owners when called. I hold the leash, the owner calls the dog, and when the dog goes "ho-hum, not gonna listen to you!" the owner runs to the door, OUT the door and into their car - and then they drive off. Meanwhile their dog is stuck with me holding onto the leash. I'm not acknowledging them at all - I'm a "tree". The dog is getting frantic! "WHERE"D MY MOM GO???" You can see it in his whole body. His attention is 100% focused on the door.

After a few minutes the owner drives in, parks and walks through the door. Then they stop, call the dog and I let go of the leash so that the dog can RACE over to his owner (who then praises and pets and gives treats and makes a big party out of it).

You use what you've got to use, right? *L* It's wonderful that Colonel made the choice of coming to the car instead of continuing after the cat - that had to be a TOUGH choice!!

Well I spoke too soon.. I was coming in tonight from outside with my sister and husband and Nikki squeeze her way out the back door when my sister came in .. Well I ran out the garage and opened up the car door hoping Nikki would get in but no a rabbit ran right in front of her . Off she ran making this dumb noise because she saw a rabbit and she was close. I had just got in from a thyroid biopsy and not feelilng too fast on the feet yet.. Hubby took off looking for her cause she bolted. He was close but not able to catch her.. She led him on an hour tour of the neighborhood, nearby woods etc... fox, deer, and neighborhood dogs and cats and rabbits.. while I drove around in the truck trying to lore her in. Nothing .. finally she got into someones vegetable garden and there was no out except to pass by my hubby who was foaming at the mouth at this point.. I don't know what to do to get her to stop this running once she escapes.. thank goodness hubby was able to keep up with her cause I couldn't tonight if I tried.. Now I see why there are so many chows found in shelters.. And its not like we haven't tried training her but this rabbit season is just killing us.. We must be getting slower in our old age.. I never had this problem in 15yrs of having chows..she just wont come back she keeps going and going and going. Its like a prison break..

Oh, let me clear up a sentence.. I meant about the shelter comment. Its that they keep running and get lost.. I'd never take her to a shelter.. my bad.. I just meant they could end up there cause they got away from the owners on their scavanger hunt for rabbit and got lost.. Nikki was determined to follow the scent of mr. rabbit know matter where it took her..she would never have found her way back home last night if hubby didn't follow her .. this worries me cause it just seems like recently she is trying harder to escape out the doors etc..Maybe its her terrible 2's..I hope it stops soon..back to our basic training..

I understood what you meant, Chowpup. When we were in Cleveland for Chowfest, Lily escaped during a potty break because we accidently clipped the lead to her liscence tag. So there we were (Chris, me, and our kids and remaining animals) just off the highway just before dark, and Lily was running with no tag to even identify her. I was scared shatless.

Lilly looks so innocent...lol
Do you think its an age thing too.. Last year she could have careless about all the rabbits and now she has taken off 3 times recently.. Once she dug out from the fence and another time the wind blew our front door open while I was in the shower and she took off. And she gets walked alot and we try to play with her but she's not that interested in playing ball anymore.. I just worry cause now Iam paranoid about the doors .. It was like the tazmanian devil the way she bolted.. (zoomies but no return)..

Lily likes to get loose and tour the hood via the underbrush. As to the door-every time I tie out Lil, she is required to sit nicely to be hooked up, or- no hook up at all. Same thing when leaving the car. Pip out first, and Lily must sit until I release her, or no getting out. It took alot of shutting the door on her face, waiting a minute, and trying again, and again. Lily does not motivate to toys or treats, but she wants to be out and about, so she will behave to achieve her goal. She still tries now and again to do a slide by, but for the most part, she does not try to bolt anymore.

Nikki is usually fine when we go for a walk she knows to sit at the door also to be hooked up but this darn rabbit population is really more of the culprit.. She just goes ape over a squirrel or rabbit.. literally she sounded like a monkey flying through the yards last night. Two neighbors came out to see what was going on . It wasn't a bark it was a "OMG I THINK IAM HAVING RABBIT DINNER TONIGHT SOUND". I just came in from food shopping and she didn't even get up to come to the door this time.. she laid in the kitchen and just watched me go in and out.. grrrr..
Glad to hear we're not alone on this..

I understood what you meant about the shelters. Chows are just so fast, when the prey drive kicks in.....they are gone!
I'm glad your hubby could keep up!
Now, about you...I hope all goes well with the thyroid biopsy.

Auddymay, Lily was just having fun, as girls will do. After all it was Chow-FEST, Lily was just putting the emphasis on "FEST"!

Sorry about the rant last night I was just having one of those moments where I wanted to fix all the problems then...
Thanks Bama for the kind words .. Iam waiting for results patiently.. Have had a few medical set backs lately, but Iam sure all will be fine.. I keep telling the insurance people they can thank me that they have a job..lol..
Nikki knew today she was in hot water. She tried being so cute to hubby tonight bringing him her toys.. He would have nothing to do with it.. He was still mad at her... (I do think I have 2 kids left in the house even though my human kids have left.) One of the neighbors in the other development told my husband its a good thing the owner of that house where you caught Nikki wasn't home.. he has 2 of the nastiest dogs around.. they would have gone after Nikki and YOu.. so that just fueled the fire more.. lol..
Its a good thing my husband is on the treadmill everynight .. He didn't last night understandably.. I had on sandals and I know I went through some poison ivy spots last night . so that will be something to keep an eye on..fun ...

Tell hubby she was just trying to up his workout- he should thank her- more scenic on a Chow escape than an old treadmill. I have caught Lily more than once when she mistakenly entered an enclosed yard...I could even see the gears turning in her head, wondering if she could get past me, and then just give up when she knew escape was futile.

Good one Auddy but I'll wait a few days to actually share with hubby.. I still see steam coming out his ears..
He said she even when he got her on the leash she tried to run after a squirrel .. He was so mad at her but kept his cool I was impressed.. I think our children (human ones) must have mellowed him out.. hehe
