Lily Learns Some Lessons

Post by Auddymay »

Lily is 11 months old. She has good points and bad points. One bad point is stubborn determination. As, I said in past postings, Lily is Fixated on rabbits. She was on the porch again last night, when the 'rabbit frenzy' started. It was just after my husband went to bed, and I was in the middle of a Texas Hold-em tournament (and winning too). I hurried and physically removed Lily from the porch. She immediately ran to the window she could see the rabbits, shoved the shades aside, and continued her tirade. Fold, check, raise...shut up Lily! I removed her from the window 7 times before she got that I was not allowing it. Needless to say, I soon tilted...lost concentration, but hey, I still won 14 bucks ... Tonight, it was the same thing, only 2 removals though.

It did rain yesterday, but today, it was downright balmy! I took Lily back to my mom's today. She saw my brother put his brittany Brady outside. She was on a dead run at him (about 50 yards away). She was on her 50 foot line, with a 4 foot leash hooked to it for my comfort. When she hit the end of the line, instead of her coming up way short, the leash clasp broke, and she never misseed a beat. She bee-lined to Brady, with me and Pip chasing behind. She ran right up to Brady...and nothing. They touched noses, a little sniff-sniff, then Lily went to examine his poo quality, while he sniffed her butt. Pip was as usual, an angel. The kennel crowd was unruly and barking when they saw us, but both Lil and Pip ignored them O:) O:) .

After that, we went down to the pond. The blue gill must think we're nuts. The girls both waded. I kept warning Lily that she was going too deep...I guess some things you have to learn yourself, because she acted like she was in a mud puddle and took 2 Tigger-like bounces toward the middle. She did a reversal as soon as she went under (she managed to keep her tail and the top of her mane dry, cause they just floated). She did about 4 dog paddles to terra firma, and then went into zoom mode. It took her a little time to step back into the water. She didn't go near as deep as the first time though

Finally, Lily was too little to try this last summer, but she has found she loves the wind in her hair, and sticks her face out the window at every opportunity. 30 to 35 mph seems to be the optimum enjhoyment range.

Not too deep...

What great photos. I love the one where you can see the who lake and you and Lily across it - very peaceful and the one in the car feeling the wind is priceless

Thanks, Debbie! The person in the photos is my daughter, Haley. I'm usually the photographer. The 'lake' is my brother's pond. He does have quite a few fish in there. We feed them our stale bread.

So, is screaming at your chow considered a "tell"?

AAARRGGHH, I completely commiserate! Soph is a good girl, and we've worked hard on "find it, leave it", and she has her list of wildlife she can chase for fun. She knows rabbits and opossums are on the do not kill list, but I let her chase squirrels (or monkey-rats, as I call them) to her hearts content, knowing in our semi-tropical climate that they will always have an avenue of escape. It's her job to keep them out of the bird food... like most smart creatures she needs a purpose, and she is DEDICATED . Well, today, she shocked me and almost got one! I had horrible visions of having to skin, clean and cook the squirrel... just not that much of a country girl, you know? Fortunately, the squirrel caught a branch at the last moment and escaped. :D

Great, great pics of the kids! Love the retro-punk just out of the water pic! Always so shocking to me to see how small they look when they're wet....

What great pictures of Lily and her buddy Pip!

I had a tough time here for awhile because the guys at the lodge had turned loose a bunch of rabbits and a couple of them migrated up to my place. The dogs would go ballistic every time they saw the rabbits. I was glad when all the bunnies disappeared (not by my doing! - I think owls, eagles and coyotes helped them vanish).

I have one photo of Khana swimming. She went in deeper than expected too and was suddenly swimming . *L* .. she didn't go back in again so I don't know if that was her one and only time or if she'll want to swim this summer.

I love the pictures! I wish I had a place like that to take Gracie. She's got this thing for Rabbits to. Whats really bad is she remembers exactly where she seen them so each time we get to these places she tries to hunt for them. I do the same thing, I hook the leash to the tie out, only for added strenth, I hook the the end of the tie out to the leash also. I am so worried one day she will take off running and everything will snap. It's amazing the strength they have when they see something they want.

Here is a pic of Sadie. She manage a swan dive over the edge of the jon boat the first go around. In this pic she decided to hang out in the knee deep water.

Great pictures everyone! I loved all of those photos... there is not much cuter than a wet chow. I always am so shocked as to how "small" Special is in reality, that he is mostly just a cute dark mass of cottonball!

Sounds like quite an escape for Lily! I'm glad she likes Brady! I especially liked Lily enjoying the breeze at her "optimum enjoyment range!" :D :D

Love all the pictures! Auddymay your stories made me laugh. I can especially picture the tigger bounces! I'm really looking forward to seeing how nanuk does at the lakes now that he is older this year.

Wow that water looks cold and deep no wonder Khana was swimming so well

The picture of Lily so reminds me of Nuk except now he tries to force his whole body out and it seems like he's going to break the window

I finally got around to trying to brush Lily out last night. She was full of bits of nature, and she smells like...well...we know what a dirty chow smells like. We spent 2 hours brushing (through CSI and ER on TV). Tonight, I tackle her massive mane. I did a cosmetic brushing of it, but it feels like beginning dreadlocks near the skin. She hates me brushing her mane, because it pulls the skin on her face. (Conversly, she enjoys when I brush her breeches, because of the way the skin pulls).

I love seeing chows in water. It's like seeing dogs playing poker or shooting pool in a painting- just too intriguing! I love the way their hair gets all spike-y like in Sadie's photo.

Except for the kennel, I enjoy taking the girls to my parents/brother's home. I grew up there, and it is a wonderful, safe place to go on an adventure. And best of all, the rabbits stay hidden because of Kitsy Wu hunting their babies. Just like Lily, she is little for a cat, but rules her domain. We did have to put Kitsy in the house when we went to my mom's, because when Lily saw her, I feared a revolt and asassination of the Empress to the Wu dynasty!

Lily does try and jam as much of herself out the window she can. She has a 'red zone' that she can't cross or she loses her window priveledge.

Oh, and yes- screaming at your Chow is a tell, but on the computer, my opponents just believe I'm 'thinking'.

What lovely photos, Sorry I have not been on the site much lately but things have been rather hetic at home, and are now begining to settle back to normal.
My Chows are fine and they have at last accepted the pigs, with no problems, all are running together in the back yard and it's just so lovely to see, The Chows take no notice of the pigs, and the pigs play all day, diggin holes in the garden as soon as I get a decent photo I will post it, but its difficult to get the pigs and the chows all together at the same time.
Susan please send me your email address again my computer crashed and I lost a lot of my emails. Sorry I have not writtten again but that is the main reason I did not have your email address.
Regards to all
