CHICO
Hello all, I have not been able to write in some time as we have had job changes, and life has seemed so hectic lately.
This weekend past my family went on a small vacation, where pets were not allowed.. so we took chico to the puppy palace to be pampered for a few nights.. my mother picked him up on Sunday to find that he had a yucky eye... she was told that they had cleaned it but were not overly worried about it so that is why they didn't bother calling us. My mom called us right away but said that she too thought it was just a small infection and could wait until we got home tuesday morning. Upon arriving home around noon on Tuesday we came home to find our poor boy's left eye had completely clouded over. When I mentioned this to my mother she said that is was not cloudy an hour ago when she cleaned it. We immediately took him to our vet who diagnosed him with acute glaucoma. He was given drops and an appointment to see a specialist the following day. We took him to that appointment where we were told it was the second worst case they had ever seen,, his eye pressure was @ 60 when it should be around 17. We had to make the split second decision to take the eye as it was causing him extreme pain.
He had the eye removal surgery today (thursday) and is on his way home now.
I was just wondering if any of you have had similar experiences and could lend some advice...???
Sitting awaiting for my boy.

I have never personally had any experience with glaucoma, but I know a couple that have. One lady has one of her Chows on medication and has to have the pressure checked on a regular basis. Sounds like your poor guy went through some serious pain. A lot of times they will damage the eye rubbing it on something or pawing at it because they are in pain, then that is when people figure out there is a problem.

Hi Anita!
I was so excited to see your name pop up. But saddened to hear about Chico's health. When he comes home, you give him a big hug and whisper Auntie Lou and Miss PB love him and hope he feels better and to rest.
You might want to PM Roxana about all this. If you remember from the old site, she shared her journey with Dakota's different surgeries and the such with her glaucoma.
Extra prayers will be said tonight for Chico.
Again, so nice to see you post. You're "other" son, must be big now!

Oh Anita,
I am so sorry to hear this. This is what happened to 2 of my cockers. We were home but within an hour, they were blind in the affected eye. I too had to have the eye removed because of the severe pressure and pain. In my case about 6 months later it happened in the other eye. After the first eye, I immediately took them to the emergency vet and we had iv's, injections, drops, you name it. We had drops for the unaffected eye to keep the pressure down, I hate to say that for both cockers once one eye was affected the other eye went within a year. That is the main reason why I no longer will have a cocker. my dads cocker is also blind. Both of the girls are functioning well and are happy as blind girls, Maya the brown one, loves to go for walks. Misty the white one is a bit slower but can navigate the house and yard. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions. I am so sorry it has happened but it isn't a death sentence and your chow can live happily and healthy for many years

Chico is resting
SO now that Chico is home things are a bit brighter... he is such a lovely chow.. last night was a bit hard, but today he even tried to do a bit of a puppy run... he is eating and drinking so that is great news... Our son keeps asking what is wrong with his chico... so we have to keep explaining it over and over to him why Chico has lost his eye. This is the hardest thing I have ever gone through with an animal... I will keep you updated... I wanted to post pictures but I don't remember how... sorry...

Chico Monkey
Well all with all the thoughts and prayers chico is making a full recovery, yesterday when I let him outside to enjoy the sun, he nipped at my feet and wanted to play a game of chase the chico. So I let my son out as well and they place tag for a while. Chico tired fast but at least he was wagging his tail and having fun... If ever I had second thoughts about the surgery they were taken care of then.
Chico is now on meds to keep his good eye. We will be doing monthly testing to try to take care of this one as well. Chico's groomer called yesterday and wanted to come and see him with presents.. people are so nice.
We have nicknamed our black cat duke the seeing eye cat as Chico follows him around like crazy now.
We are also thinking of making Chico a pirate for Halloween... patch and all... he he he... How undignified.
Love to all your Chows, you never now what tomorrow brings so enjoy them while you can.
big hugs to Shiloh and Mr. N... I bet Mr. N has grown to be a fine little/big brother.... I miss his mischeif too.
xxxxx Chico Monkey and his humane servants....
