My chow's size

Post by Stathis »

Greetings everyone,
i am making this post in order to seek some clarification in order to understand if something goes terribly wrong or if everything is just fine.
I am a proud owner of a beautiful female chow chow. Her name is Choco and she is currently 23 months old.My main concern is her size. She has stopped growing in size for quite some time now and i am worried something might be wrong.
Her weight is roughly 20kgs and her height is around 43 cm at shoulder.
I am attaching some photos of her.
Thank you in advance for your information and help.
Sorry if the photo quality isnt the best :/

Females tend to be smaller. She looks OK height wise. Thin, but based on her legs she is more athletic than many of the chows you will see posted here. This is OK. Check out some of the posts on historical chows. This was more of the standard some years back.

She is not heavily boned, and has an open face type. It's become about preference for many Chow owners and breeders, but this is perfectly acceptable, and she probably has a longer life span expectancy than those other types.

She has a nice alert look in all the photos, which is really good. Displaying nice personality. I wouldn't worry.

She is quite athletic since we usually run together for about an hour and a half everyday and she always seems to enjoy it.
I am mostly concerned because since she was a puppy she never ate all of her food, always left some of it in the bowl and she never changed that habit till now although i tried a couple of different brands,so since most people always ask me "isn't she a bit small for her age/race?" i was afraid i might have done something wrong with the feeding process.
I used those specific photos in order to try and give you the idea of her actual size.
Another question i had is if its normal that her fur isnt as long(?) as other chows i've seen around.
Im sorry if my questions seem stupid its just my first experience as a dog owner and i also apologise for any mistakes in my English :)

she looks perfect to me. She is the old style Chow, longer & leaner than the current AKC standard. My 3 yr old male is old style too, I didnt even know he was pure chow when I found him on Petfinders.com. Personally, I prefer the open face long lean look. She's a beauty, enjoy her : )

She still falls into the breed standard height for chows which is 16- 22inches at the shoulder. 43 cm is 16.93 inches. Girls are 16-20 and guys are 18-22 usually. There are even smaller chow chows marketing people call them mini chows'. Translation: too small for breed standard or runts. There are also taller chows which are disqualified from dog shows. I would not worry about your baby. She looks healthy, loved and happy to me. At least you didn't get the mange prone kind like my baby.

Yup, within standard. Not everyone gets the 'bear' genes like ours have. FengHuang was a little shorter and a massive 65lbs of muscle and bone. ShenLung is a whopping 85lbs (summer weight) and right at the spec height, he can however pull 500 lbs with ease, jump up 8 feet, etc., and he is a full 8" across the shoulders (looks like a park bench). ;) FuShiLu is still maturing but currently at 19" height and 63 lbs, and faster than Border Collies zero to 15 yards and far faster changing direction. However that pales in comparison to ShenLung's acceleration after fur snacks. See - Chows are all over the map in size, weight, ability and build. This is a good thing as it means the genetics are still active. ;)
