I just had Chloe in to see the vet with a similar issue but hers was all scabby/lil bloody from chewing it. It was the last inch or two of her tail but she also had a few other places on her skin as well. My vet said it is allergies and gave her a shot, some abx, and I am to give her a Zyrtec or claritin every day during spring/possibly summer. No idea if your problem is related.

Laura are you sure your vet said to give your dog Zyrtec or Claritin? I know you can give a dog Benedryl but I have never heard of the others.Laura wrote:I just had Chloe in to see the vet with a similar issue but hers was all scabby/lil bloody from chewing it. Re: bald spot on the tail
Yes she gave me all three options. I chose Zyrtec(generic is fine) because it is one pill per day. Benadryl would have required 3 pills twice a day based on her weight and something about how they metabolize Benadryl. She gets these skin irritations every spring but her tail was worse this time around so we went in to get it checked. I did read that it isn't good if your dog has liver issues but we had just checked her senior blood panel. I also read not to give Zyrtec D because of the pseudoepehedrine. We will try it for a few weeks and let her clear up and then I will see how she does without it once we get through spring.
